Description
This picture is inspired by a mystical novel Viy, written by the renowned Russian-Ukrainian author Nikolai Gogol, with elements of folklore, horror, and grotesque. The story was published in 1835 an is considered one of the classics of Russian literature.
During a summer break, Khoma and two fellow theology students lose their way and seek shelter for the night at a remote farm, where they encounter an old woman who turns out to be a witch. In a terrifying and surreal encounter, the old woman rides Khoma through the night, transforming into a beautiful young maiden before he overpowers and beats her.
Upon returning to Kiev, Khoma is summoned to a rich Cossack's estate to read prayers for three nights over the body of his deceased daughter, who he soon recognizes as the same witch he had encountered.

Excellent! Definitely this should illustrate an English language edition of Gogol's work. Now I guess I shall have to read it. I did watch that 2010ish strange movie that combined Viy with Baron Munchausen; "Forbidden Empire", of which at least the opening was quite good, depicting as I think it did the night of Ivan Kupala. Excellent art here, you are quite talented.
Thank you very much CleonXXI
