Description
~Atom Eve~
Today's fierce redhead is a hero known as Atom Eve, a founding member of the Guardians of the Globe. Created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Cory Walker, she debuted in Invincible #5 in 2004. Her origin is a complex sci-fi tale: she is Samantha Eve Wilkins, a government project who gained reality-altering powers after her DNA was spliced with a symbiote from another dimension.
In the story, Eve is far more than just a powerful superhero - she is the emotional anchor and often the voice of reason for the team and love interest for Mark Grayson (Invincible). Her abilities to manipulate matter at a subatomic level make her one of the most formidable beings on the planet, yet her character is defined by her profound compassion and her desire to solve root humanitarian world issues.
Although Samantha was a protagonist in the original comics, she is sidelined as a background character in the Amazon Prime "Invincible" TV series, being replaced by Amber (strong, diverse, flawless female) for the entire first 2 seasons. Sam remains an isolated hermit in the middle of a jungle doing... nothing up to the last season, when she finally recaptures her canon role in the story.
From Amber, we've got this non-canonical, stale and 1-sided relationship that added nothing to the story, but fulfilled the virtue signaling role for 2 seasons. Her character couldn't evolve because she was already the flawless diverse strong female character from the very beginning. As a result, Mark remained in this non-canonical stale relationship with Amber for most of the show, while Sam remained isolated in the jungle, living like a hermit.
However, Sam gets a special episode telling her origin story, from lab rat to escaping, being adopted and raised by foster parents. This transition was orchestrated by a hidden figure who is gradually revealed over time. If not for this special episode, Sam's role in the show would have been overshadowed for the sake of mandatory virtue signaling (Amber). If not for this special episode, viewers would think Sam came from nowhere in the last season, when in reality, she was a protagonist from the very beginning in the source material.
In the end, I am glad Amazon Prime didn't resolve to race-swapping Sam like most other shows often do with redheads. Instead, she was sidetracked for most of the show, only regaining her canon place in the story at the very last season, back to her rightful place.

Sounds like Eve could be the perfect mate to Dr. Manhattan, with the entire galaxy as their private playground to do as they please ;-)
Maybe not, since Sam was genetically engineered to be incapable of manipulating organic matter - something allowed to Dr, Manhattan. However, the one exception to this rule was only revealed by the end of the 3rd season, with surprising repercussions. ^____^
I love this site! Redhead, redheads, redheads! Also, I find out about interesting characters I did not know about.
Indeed, Atom Eve (Samantha) was overshadowed in her own show by this non-canon DSF (diverse strong female) for the majority of the animated series for the sake of virtue signaling. This repeats a pattern we have seen in many other shows, where redheads are replaced by DSFs, usually using plain race swapping. However, in this case, I am glad they didn't race swap Sam. Instead, they created a new DSF to replace her in the first 2 seasons, allowing Sam to return on the 3rd. In the comics, she actually marries the protagonist (Mark/Invincible), so it would be impossible to simply erase her from her own story.
I like the sign on her shirt! Once again a character I never heard of, but you always keep us on track. Great background telling and picture.
Thank you! Indeed, I suspect Sam was replaced by Amber for most of the animated show exactly because she wore pink, her chest emblem was the Venus glyph, and most of all (unforgivable), she was a redhead. But since she has a major role in the source material, she couldn't simply be replaced by the strong diverse female (Amber), so Amazon Prime was forced to let her regain protagonism in the 3rd season. In spite of the injustice done to Sam in the animated show, in the 3rd season we finally see Sam in all her redhead glory and realize all the awesomeness we have been missing. I hope to see MORE of Sam in the upcoming 4th season! 😁
Oh, you cannot get enough green-eyed redheads! It's a physical impossibility! That guy in the wheelchair said so!
She is awesome, and I can think of a few folks for her to visit and re-arrange an atom or 200,000. Fantastic work as always!
Thank you! I am expecting a whole lot of Sam (Atom Eve) in the upcoming 4th season. ^^
