Description
Using Watertight doors to secure their 15 watertight compartments on the lowest 6 decks of the ship, the doors on the upper decks are closed by hand, with the most important ones in the boiler rooms on the ship able to be closed with a flip of a switch automatically. It was this design that led to the thought that the Titanic was 'practically unsinkable'.
12 watertight doors sealed the bulkheads, which separated the watertight compartments. If the Captain or Bridge Officer detected an issue, they could release the strong clutch that held the reinforced steel doors in place. When released the doors would close within 30 seconds. The watertight door shaft in the glass display case was from the bulkhead door between boiler room 1 and 2.
In the exhibit, they created a model version of the doors and you walked underneath them through the doorway to get to the next room.
