Now it was time to go back north to see another hole in the ground, a much different one -- they call it The Grand Canyon.
I wanted to hike one of the trails all the way down to the bottom but only made it about 80% of the way, then turned back -- it was just too long and it was getting late.

Very impressive photos!
Thanks, Blue:-)
Now that is one big hole in the ground must be one great view
It sure is big. It drops down thousands of feet to the bottom, and you can feel the temperature change.
They don't call it "Grand" for nothing, do they?
True! And it's even grander when you attempt to walk it on foot.
I think these are Dimensions the human Mind cannot realise! Great Views for eternity!
True.... But if you get too overwhelmed you can just pretend it's just a bunch of silly rocks and boring sand;-))
I've been there once - dying to go back! This place is beyond amazing. Beautiful shots!
Chrysaor nailed it.. The rock features are so massive, as are the distances - and our brains just can't do the math. The brain-cells just sit back and look out the windows - and say to each other, "I hope this fool doesn't step on a loose rock or something.. It's a lonnnng way down!"
:-) ... funny thing -- when I thought I finally got to the bottom, suddenly there was another vertical drop of at least 1000 feet straight down to the river! ... lol.
Nice photos. When the first pioneers came across it they were stopped. They couldn't cross it. If they went south around it they would have to cross a hot desert, so they went north to get around it. That was later called the Oregon trail. - Bob
Yes, that would have been a bit of a problem -- especially if you're pulling wagons.
