The flamingo croquet scene is one of the most iconic and surreal moments in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and it’s full of Carroll’s signature absurdity and satire.
🦩 The Setup:
Alice finds herself at a croquet game hosted by the Queen of Hearts
🔮 The Absurd Elements:
Mallets are live flamingos, and they’re constantly wriggling or trying to fly away.
Balls are live hedgehogs, who don’t roll straight and tend to wander off.
Wickets are soldiers, bent over in formation — but they’re scared of the Queen, so they often stand up and run away.
So the whole thing is complete chaos — no structure, no fairness, and yet the Queen insists on “rules” and shouts “Off with their heads!” constantly.
🎭 The Meaning Behind It All:
This scene is more than just weird for weird’s sake. It plays with ideas like:
Authority without order – The Queen claims to be in charge, but no one really knows or follows the rules.
Satire of Victorian society – It mocks the rigidity and hypocrisy of the adult world Alice is navigating.
Loss of control – Alice keeps trying to make sense of things, but everything resists logic or stability.

Thank you - I always wondered when I'd have an occasion to use Ken's flamingo "mallet pose!"
