I'm betting that the Short Sunderland did not have internal heating. The long-suffering crew were wrapped to their necks in sweaters, scarves, and outer winter wear. Imagine the navigator taking off his gloves to plot the course! I suppose they considered such conditions unavoidable and kept on going.

I also never complain about flying boats or their crews- your piece is spectacular- the sea surface adds drama to the image. Have you thought of trying ice-flows as another approach to alleviate the monotony of lots of largely featureless water?
