Description

Argentina during the early Cenomanian Age 95 million years BCE I never expected to end my days marooned in late Cretaceous Argentina being pursued by a zombie Giganotosaurus that mysteriously arose from the dead moments after I had crashed the time machine smack bang into a major time reef. I scrambled out just in time before the damn thing blew it's chronic capacitor and showered the area in tachyon particles. Lucky for me, I had at least made sure I had also helped myself to the chrono-suit when I purloined the machine from my Dad's lock-up. This had helped shield me from the temporal waves. However it seemed a half -decayed dinosaur- this damn Giganotosaurus was just waiting around to get revived, probably because of that burst of high energy tachyons! It was so unfair- why did this have to happen to me! My reverie was interrupted by a glottal throaty roar and I focussed on putting as much distance as possible between myself and the resurrected theropod. I dared not look behind me as I needed my full attention to navigate through the forest in the crepuscular light of a Cretaceous dawn. I could smell the beast, however, as it's massive body was in an advanced state of putrefaction, my gorge rising at the rank odour of rotten meat and bloodless carcasses. In truth I had no one but myself to blame for my situation. My dad had managed to arrange a summer job for me at the Temporal Bureau of Investigation, some low grade admin work to tide me over until next semester. My curiosity had been aroused when I came across my Dad's name in the records, which led me to this lock-up he had kept hidden from the rest of us out in the Wiltshire Suborbital. There I found the Mark 3 Time Travel Pod, kept in almost pristine condition, not something your average citizen would be allowed within ten light years of normally. So how did my Dad end up with one in his possession? Curious as I was, I wasn't about to ask him as I was more interested in fulfilling a long standing ambition I had held since early childhood. You see, I had always dreamed of travelling back to the age of the great dinosaurs and with this machine I was finally going to be able to make that dream into a reality. All I had to do was to learn how to fly the infernal thing first. You'd be surprised (well I was) how many immersive tutorials there are on the info-sphere on how to fly a time machine. Shit, I fancied myself an expert (of course) by the time I had worked my way through about twenty of them in a space of long weekend. I had even managed to go on some high grade simulations, which I reasoned were as good as the real thing. I started to put distance between me and the beast, I had stamina and some technological tricks like the night vision settings on my goggles. But I don't know how much these augmentations really helped cause the damned thing was keeping up with me, gaining ground despite its massive bulk and reduced musculature. I raced between trees, navigated fallen log bridges, looking for that high terrain. I run towards this outcrop of rock adrenaline thumping through me. I was dying on my feet, the humid air of the Cenomanian night sapping my energy. I reached the top of the outcrop, supremely confident that it was damn sight better bet then the screeching monster on my tail. I felt a omnious splash of liquid hitting me on the back of the neck. The death smell was in my nostrils now. This was it, what else could I do? Just as I thought I was giving up, a fresh burst of terror bowled me toward the top of the incline, but to be honest I wasn't paying much attention to the way forward as I watched in absolute horror as the jaws descended for the kill. Then I was plummeting over the ridge and sliding down a sheer rock wall at a 65 degree angle and then I am tumbling into the abyss as I realise I have exited the plateau and I tumble towards a more precipitous drop to the bottom of an ancient ravine.
