Thanks so much! This background with the clamshell made the idea of it being a bed come easily :-)

Thanks so much for the comment! Merpal is a neat character, and I'm glad I had another chance to use her!

You pilled it off nicely. I need to do underwater scenes, but I feel a little intimidated.
perpetualrevision 7:56PM | Mon, 30 May 2022
Thanks so much! This scene and the one I posted before it were done using backgrounds, which makes it pretty easy, but there are some nice underwater environments, like 2nd World's Underwater Wonders and Cybertenko's Captain Nemo's Hunting Grounds. Both come with lights that help with caustics, but I have no idea how either might work in Superfly. I love doing underwater scenes with environments and have gathered a lot of plants, seashells, fish, and so on to add to scenes, but setup always takes forever, so I'm really enjoying using these backgrounds for portraits!

Wonderful character and scene! Love the light (or postwork?) which beautifully mimics underwater caustics. Well done!
perpetualrevision 8:01PM | Mon, 30 May 2022
Thanks so much! The look of caustics comes from several sources: the background, Merpal's texture, and the lighting. I didn't add any in postwork, at least not on this image! :-)

The posing and expression of Merpal is great; really cute and ready for a nap. I have messed with underwater and the caustics usually defeat me. This works great and the blending from the diffusely blurred background to the sharper foreground is very effective. Even the danged bubbles look good (bubbles are hard, trust me >.<).
Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed viewing. I must return to efforts at submerging some of my characters. Eh. That didn't come out quite right. XD

Thanks so much for the comments, Molly! I've done a fair number of underwater scenes using full environments, and the lighting is definitely tricky, but I picked up a few things from studying the lighting that came with a couple of sets (including Cybertenko's Captain Nemo's Hunting Grounds and 2nd World's Underwater Wonders). For my purposes, the methods I've tried work pretty well (enough to satisfy me!), but of course they rely on Firefly lighting tricks so probably wouldn't work in Superfly.
It is kinda fun to imagine "submerging" your characters -- and your props! I've bought a bunch of stuff to go in undersea environments, like seashells, plants, fish, etc., but as someone else pointed out, you can put pretty much any prop underwater, which opens up all kinds of possibilities!

You have certainly succeeded in blending the foreground elements with the softness of the background! Very impressive work! This is a fun scene!
perpetualrevision 8:09PM | Mon, 30 May 2022
Thanks so much! Shortly after I posted this, I realized I had already forgotten how I softened the foreground elements. So I opened up the PSD and was pleased to discover that I'd named the layers according to what I'd done. Phew!

what a pleasant underwater adventure you made for us. now i need to get all those products.

Thanks so much! If you don't already have Merpal, she's a great addition to the Nursoda collection. I'm really enjoying these backgrounds b/c they let me focus on characters, without having to fuss quite so much over all the other details! I can't believe it took me this long to figure out how to render over a background :-)

Her face is very impressing! And thank you very much for the links :-), it is good to know how you can generate that amazing water caustics.
