Description

Iray. This marks a revelation to me that HDRIs work best with a minimal "studio" environment, as well as that it's called "high dynamic range" for a reason. This also marks the first time that -- because the HDRI is the only lighting in the scene -- I took a render to 98% convergence, of which 80% was in the first 20 minutes, 95% the first hour (I went off to bed after that, but wouldn't be surprised if the last 3% took another hour at least). Also took the focal length down to 35mm to force the perspective a bit. The idea originally was to have a woman reading at a cafe or coffeeshop, but the environments weren't playing well with the HDRI so I made it a studio shot. Also, multiple hair props and dresses were tried that weren't suitable, however much I liked them. The character's face perfectly suits the subject matter and the posing is excellent. Been there with longer dresses in seated poses and hand held books. Might try looking at the HDRI cameras and lights from Adam Thwaites (Most Digital Creations). These come with his characters, which are quite reasonable, realistic and easy to use - click, rotate if you wish, and shoot. I use them a lot with portraits and with the old 1080i on this machine this scene would render in about twenty-thirty minutes depending upon added textures, hair etc. Then it gets longer...

The only technical issue with long skirts or dresses, aside from whether they can simulate with an applied 'dynamic surface' at all if they aren't already dforce, is having to use the timeline simulation so that everything begins separated. Doesn't always work well. But the difficulty here was finding something in the wardrobe that fit the character's personality.

I've been on Thwaites' site, I'll have another look now that you mention the lights. Thanks!

Exquisite. There is something to be said for the way a woman wears herself, you have done an outstanding job on this image, giving proof that a fully clothed model can be both sexy and sensual simultaneously.

The light is beautiful in this image and I really like how the dress turned out in this pose. Lovely work!
