Description

Fort Pulaski Savannah, Georgia The American Civil War may have been over in 1865, but the long arm of history is still with us. Some call it the War Between the States. Some call it the War of Northern Aggression. The War to Preserve the Union. The War of Southern Rebellion. There are more. It all depends upon your point of view and where you're from. Shortly after the end of the war, there came to be something called the Lost Cause movement. It idealized the Confederacy and put a hazy, romantic filter over the war. Lost Cause stories featured bravery and chivalry, sacrifice, and grace under pressure, ignoring the reality and horror of the war. I've tried to capture the feel of the Lost Cause movement in this picture. .......... Topaz filter is "blossomblush" ..... I've decided to post a few of my favorite photographs, a handful from each year, on Flickr. So far I've got 2007 and 2008 done. We'll see if I run out of steam, or if I can finish this project! It seemed sort of weird to just jump in over there with no history. Trying Flickr is my grand experiment for 2018. I'll let you know how it goes! .......... Somehow I lost count, and when I posted this, I didn't realize it was a "milestone" image. I always kept track and mentioned the count every hundred pictures back when RR kept that info for us, but now I have to do it on my own, and I've apparently missed something somewhere! LOL! Anyway. 3100 posts on my account now. :)

yes, this has a nostalgic "looking back in yearning" look. It also has a dark and sad feel. Which it should have for an image of war and loss. You 'fogged' over an already deep cavern; gave some of the mortar (in the bricks) a luminous cast, you made the cannon seem almost an apparition, and the surrounding wall seem like it was 'thought' on as well as built on. Very haunting image. These deep archways obviously call you, as you've done beautiful work with them every time...

(Good luck with flickr! I hope people notice you there. I'll go there one of these days soon...)

A very striking image. The filter work looks like fog or smoke from cannon fire. As a historian I believe there is only one term that can be used for the actions of the Confederacy - treason. Treason against the United States. And their beloved flag is the flag of treason. Even Robert E. Lee understood how divisive the myth of the noble "lost Cause" would be. He urged his troops to honor him by putting away their battle flags and once again embracing the United States and the cause their Northern brethren who fought for her. The real tragedy is that the vast majority of Southerners who fought and died owned no slaves. They were suckered into fighting by the 1% who warned of a loss of states rights and local sovereignty. Neither was ever in danger. Sorry to ramble on but I seldom get to exercise my history chops.

Interesting discussion Tara and you captured the mood well. But I also want to thank you for helping me again, and that was more than two months ago. So 'thank you.. And yes you got me figured out as far as noise and speed is concerned, at least for cars and airplanes.

I think you captured the feel perfectly, Tara. The dreamy quality of this gives us the feeling of peace and calm after the guns go silent, but reminds us that like the guns, the memory will always be part of our history.

it's interesting how, when you look at both viewpoints (North vs. South) the radical difference between the two as to how they view their participation. Even today we see this going on.
