Description

'Our Lady of the Rosary' is a Catholic church in Si'usega in the outskirts of Apia on the north central coast of Upolu Island, Samoa. This church is famously known as 'The Prime Ministers Church'. The Christian missionaries that arrived here beginning with the Rev.John Williams in 1830 have done an excellent job. 98% of Samoa's population today is Christian. Here is a breakdown of the range of groups as of 2011: Congregational Christian Church in Samoa: 31.8% Roman Catholics: 19.4% Latter-day Saints: 15.1% Methodist: 13.7%s: Assemblies of God: 8.0% Seventh-day Adventist: 3.0% Others 8.1% Although there is no official estimate, there are reportedly small numbers of Hindus, Buddhists, and Jews, primarily in Apia. The country has one of the world's eight Baha'i Houses of Worship. There is a small Muslim community and one mosque. I did not see any temples, mosques, or synagogues. However, whenever there are several houses, there is invariably a church and I started to wonder if there are enough people to justify and attend services. On the other hand, when seeing one of the beautiful churches or cathedrals, I asked myself 'where is the money coming from'. There is supposed to be freedom of religion, however in reality it is often enforced by the village 'matai' as to which church one has to attend, how often one has to attend, and how much one has to contribute. There is also often open opposition to new faiths attempting to establish themselves. Primary education, schools 1 through 8, are usually run by churches, with religious studies being mandatory. Lovely church. Interesting how the community leadership can dominate religious orthodoxy, however it has been around since the pharaohs. Religion can also dominate the community. Even when I was a kid, children were warned not to play with members of faiths different than theirs.

Thanks for the statistics. I didn't know Samoa was like that. This church looks bigger than the cathedral and with somewhat different architecture. It would be interesting to check architectural styles to denominations. Keep up the good work. :-)
