Description

This is another unusual monument IMO. Notice the "posts" holding the fencing in place around the monument -- dad-gummed biggest Minie balls I've ever seen. (and the real thing was big enough!) The gent in the picture is looking across towards The Corn Field. It is still farmed and yes, sometimes they find somebody from that day so long ago. A proper burial follows in the National Cemetery outside the town. Casualties for both sides were between 23K and 24K for both sides: KIA, MIA, and wounded. The single bloodiest day of the war and a day that changed European perceptions about the progress of the war: No clear winners; Lee retreated; the northern armies could hold their own. That was enough for Lincoln and his plans to announce the Emancipation Proclamation on the heels of a Union victory thus widening the goals of the war. Enjoy; thanks for viewing. We are almost done here for now. We plan to revisit when the weather is a tad nicer.

Beautiful capture and Like Bill's post at Gettysburg, a bit of history that we were never taught in school!

Man, so many monuments and so little time to comment them all. And to think each represents so many young fellows' lives shattered or snuffed out. Such a pity. Keep up the good work! :-)

Yup. But in doing so, they shaped the country we became.

Corn fields, wheat fields and peach orchards seemed to hold a fatal attraction for units in the Civil War on many battlefields. Fine looking monument...we drove by and didn't stop for a picture...so many monuments and a dwindling afternoon kept us on the move.
