Description
The apple shapes were made with Art Of Illusion. The textures were made by simply taking some photos of apple peels. Textures in Photoshop.

The apples do look real to me.
Thanks, Horo. I took quite a few photos of apple skins then mapped them to the apples using UV Mapper Classic(free, and easy to use).
