Description

This is another illustration for the upcoming POWERS BEYOND superhero roleplaying game (I think this will go in the equipment section about cybernetic implants and stuff like that). And it's my first illustration using Poser 11's Comic Book Preview. I think I like this option. The geometric edges are easy to use and they saved me some time from my usual process of loading the objects into Photoshop and manually applying an edge around the figure. However, the Gama Girl (yup, I dusted off that oldie but goodie) textures were low-res and I had to manually redraw the interior lines on her costume. The mask was particularly pixilated. The coloring was all done manually -- I just used blocks of color. My usual process is to let some of the underlying color render show through, but I didn't do that this time. The bricks are from the "Brick in the Wall" prop over at Daz. Finally, the line shading was applied by filling the region with a pattern and then painting away what I didn't want on a layer mask. I'm reading the b&w collection of ZOT! by Scott McCloud right now, and I definitely felt inspired to try my hand at some of the effects he used. I may also post the version without the color halftones (I added them to keep this consistent with the other images I created for this book). I think the shading looks better without the interference of the halftone patterns (which were created with Flaming Pear's India Ink filter). Edit 2:30 pm: I should also probably mention that the cybernetic arm was taken from an old robot model (possibly one of the stock ones that ship with Poser, but it could be something I purchased a long time ago -- I can't remember). Anyway, I did something really cheesy to combine the robot's arm with Gama Girl's body. Since this was for a still image, I just used the Hiearchy Editor to hide her arm and hide his body, then I just positioned the two next to each other. I also posed her so that her shoulder hides any gaps or overlaps between the two figures. Cheesy, but effective!

You're very welcome. I like to read that kind of stuff from other artists, so I try to post it myself when I can (or when I do something different from my usual process).

Do you have any tutorials on YouTube showing your process? This turned out very well.

Not yet, but I've been thinking about making a video. I may start with a written tutorial on my blog: mikemitchellonline.blogspot.com

Thanks for the interest! I'll definitely give it some more thought.
