Description

A statue of the Emperor Franz Joseph. There were many statues of Franz Joseph in Vienna, as well as in the other central European countries we visited & his name came up often when our guides talked about the history of the region. He reigned over various configurations of the Austro-Hungarian empire for 67 years, which was the third longest reign in European history (after Louis XIV of France and Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein). The assassination of the heir to his throne, his nephew the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in 1914 is considered the spark that ignited World War 1. According to Wikipedia, his "official grand title" was: "His Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty, Francis Joseph I, by the grace of God Emperor of Austria; Apostolic King of Hungary, King of Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, Slavonia, Galicia, Lodomeria, Illyria; King of Jerusalem, etc.; Archduke of Austria; Grand Duke of Tuscany, Crakow; Duke of Lorraine, Salzburg, Styria, Carinthia, Carniola, the Bukovina; Grand Prince of Transylvania; Margrave of Moravia; Duke of the Upper & Lower Silesia, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Guastalla, Oswiecin, Zator, Cieszyn, Friuli, Ragusa, Zara; Princely Count of Habsburg, Tyrol, Kyburg, Gorizia, Gradisca; Prince of Trent, Brixen; Margrave of the Upper & Lower Lusatia, in Istria; Count of Hohenems, Feldkirch, Bregenz, Sonnenberg, etc.; Lord of Trieste, Kotor, the Wendish March; Grand Voivode of the Voivodship of Serbia etc. etc.." Quite a mouthful. I'm not sure if the "etc. etc.." is part of the official title or is a placeholder for other locations...

lol on the name. If I ever get an "etc etc" at the end of my name, I'll know I made it...You've pulled back hues and detail on the background (assuming it was shot differently than what we see), which lets the statue stand out by comparison. And your crop, with little sky, really encloses him, as he's framed by those ornate windows and capitals, etc. Isn't it amazing how history singles out leaders, but leaves out so many others? Ol' Franz Joseph got a lot of attention! In any case, your highly varied greens here, with very fine textures, stand out against those alabaster-hued walls. Looks like a tough shot, because of the plethora of detail in fore and background; but you differentiated them very clearly.

(In Philadelphia, we found a guy whose name was Hugo Wolfeschlegelsteinhausubergerdorfdt Sr. (That's "Senior". Apparently there were others...) It's not F. Joseph's name, but it's got a certain ring....)
