Description

"I'll be there with the parcel..." JS indicated 3 with his fingers. "In three hours. It depends on the traffic." H34 said. Lee noticed that JS's smile had become wolfish, amused by something known only to him. After the phone call, JS put a pair of earphones with blaring music on the killer's ears and covered his head with a sack. Then he walked to the fire escape. "Where are you going?" Lee asked worriedly. "Your friend here doesn't know how long he slept and hasn't the slightest idea of where we are." JS chuckled. "This fleabag motel is ten minutes away from the orcs' den, so I have time enough to do a recon." "Look, you saved again my life ..." Lee said. "Old habits die hard." JS grinned. "I'd like to help you. For Eve!" "OK, I've a role for you in my plans." JS replied, stepping over the window. "Really? What should I do?" "Play the decoy." JS smiled and vanished. Few minutes later, H34 began to squirm in his chair. He went on for at least five good minutes, then blurted out: "You'll keep your promise, right, Sea. If I help you, I mean." Lee said nothing. After a while H34 began whining, demanding assurances, until Lee was so pissed off that lowered the earphones' volume and snorted: "Usually, he keeps it, although sometimes many would prefer he did not." "What do you mean with that? Everyone says he is an honourable man." H34 whimpered shaking his head to take off the sack. "This is the problem: sure, he is an honourable man," Lee quipped. "Keep your part of the contract and he’ll keep his. Now shut up and stay put." "Where did he go? Is he here? Sea, are you here?" No answer came. Within minutes JS reached the old steam plant serving as the orcs' HQ. None of the occupants had the thought-blocker device. Apparently no one knew he was a telepath. JS smiled, this was a valuable asset. But there was another mind inside besides the orcs' ... "A Gray!" Climbing like a cat JS reached one of the large windows and peered inside. "Idiots!" the professional in him thought: they were having a party. Inside the orcs were in full playtime. Having three hours of waiting before the arrival of their prey, they had decided to spend their time with the services of a stripper. The woman was a cicada. She had a short time left and was there because the orcs' promise to put in a good word for her with their boss, the Gray. JS wondered how anyone in his/her right mind would believe the word of an orc, it was a mystery. The woman was dancing while one of the orcs was strumming a tune. The others were cheering the performance shooting, bellowing, drooling and jerking. JS focused on the Gray. His presence there confirmed JS's worst suspicions: now he knew for certain that behind Eve's kidnapping there were the Grays and Eros Flaw. He had hoped it was just 3TC's backlash, but this was something much more serious and dangerous. He had to interrogate the Gray and counterattack soon, very soon. "So G-2348 is your name, bastard!" JS thought. "They have to be desperate to send here someone halfway in the Grays' kissing ass ladder! A marquis, someone like you never leaves the Gray Sector." JS was one of the few to know the Gray aristocracy numbered 4032 individuals whose importance was expressed by the name: the higher the number the less important the person. JS quickly moved away from his position to lay booby-traps in every secondary exits. Now only the main door was a possible escape for the occupants. "I could take this woman to the Body Bank." the Grey thought and JS saw his car waiting on the roof and a merc walking back and forth. In a flash JS reached the roof. As the man came near the chimney, JS grabbed him by the belt and slammed his head against the steely structure. Then he plunged his knife neatly into his back going directly for the heart. Done that, JS put a rope trap on the roof-door. "I'll get you, fucking Gray rabbit!" --- Thanks!

well ok: Coming in in the middle of things, I don’t know all the details. Not quite sure who everyone is. But I have the gist of it. Leaving H34 behind, squirming and wanting reassurances, is real captive stuff. JS goes into some enemy territory, sees a bunch of Orcs having a party in what appears to be a steam-punk warehouse that was turned into a club. (A steam plant.) And you describe a small strip-club like atmosphere, made out of a warehouse/boiler room environment. All well done for us. And Gray is a fascinating character, even though I don’t know his history at this point. There’s obviously an antagonism set up here.

The part where JS gets to the roof and stabs the man, is done in fine under-the-veil-of-darkness manner, getting his man stealthily and completely *“fucking Gray rabbit”). I was inside the actions all the way. You usually put revelations of one kind or another in each episode, and it brings more of the enemies into focus each time you do. I’m coming in “fresh” here, but I still got some good details about the Orcs, Gray, etc. Well done.

(btw, Flavia: just a technical point: Have you considered placing paragraph spaces into the narrative, more often? It’s perfectly readable as it is, but with more spaces, it would be easier to move from idea to idea. Maybe your concerned it would lose some readers, because of the length on the page?)

As always, your image is well thought-out and expertly composed. The center is the woman; and the men surround her in a kind of semi-circle, with lots of shadow on them (fittingly) at various points. The Gray---to our right---is deliciously gray. (Well, duhhhhh...but visually, he really stands out.) I love his expression and sunglasses. And are his shoes made of marble??? (Hey, in this story, it could happen!) Love the tattoos, and I think the guy on the far left is wearing a tattoo’d shirt---I don’t know if that’s a real shirt or if it’s burned into his skin. Great details, as always. I’ll tell you this: If I were invited to an Easter supper, I don’t know if I’d wanna bring these guys as “guests”. (I grew up with Passover---my grandfather would pull me aside and whisper: “On Passover? You bring these people???”) The room details are right on the button---love the tall girders, that huge blue pipe, the wheels and the two ultra rusted barrels (got knows what’s been in them), the tubing on that whatever-it-is on the right (a jet engine??? a turbine of some kind?) And the light on that far right table with the booze on it. And you draw us to the guy with guns---another delightful guy you’d not wanna have to a wedding...The dancer is holding an oriental fan, I think; and, via your lighting, she’s the center of the piece. Your attention to detail is always very fine; and your angles here---from each side to the center---are dramatic: We move to the center via left and right angling their way into it. This lady’s gotta be thinking, “oh yeah, this is the bunch I wanna work for. Delightful guys...” Terrific image, as always.
