Description
I received a call yesterday from a man traveling from the west coast. He saw an owl on the side of the road. He told me that when he stopped and walked up to it, the owl did not seem to know he was there. It had been hit by a car. The blood you see on his beak is left from what I could not clean off. This very nice person wrapped it in his coat, got in the car and then called 911. He had no idea who else to call. He apologized to the dispatcher, but explained that he was from out of state and just needed to find help for this owl. The dispatcher had to laugh and then explained that she knew just who to call, and that he was not to worry. She explained to him that as I would consider this an emergency, the 911 call was fine. She gave him my number. I could not leave work, so he agreed to take the owl to my vet to be cared for until I could get there in the evening. In am not sure the owl will make it. I know that one eye is blind, and I am not sure if the other has a chance. We do not keep blind animals, so he will have to be put down if he does not recover sight in the one eye. You have to understand. If you take a wild animal that has suddenly lost sight, it will be forever frightened of any noise that it hears. It will always believe that it is about to be eaten and has no idea how to get away.
All I can do is give him time. I was, how ever, so very happy to find such a good person that not only risked injury, put took about an hour out of his travel to help an injured animal. I deal with so many mean people, I found this one to be a real blessing.

Faith in humanity == restored! for this kind gentleman and his actions. My thoughts and prayers go out to this owl for a successful recovery, However, it is my very sad feeling that, barring a miracle, this owl will have to do the long sleep!

I work with a local raptor rehab center, located in a middle school. Student volunteers learn some hard lessons and gain respect for the animals. I do hope this owl makes it..if too damaged to be released, I understand that scenario, too. Car are real killers of low flying owls after prey in the dark. Thanks for doing what you can. I believe the Creator has a place for the beings...animals, people. No proof one way or the other more than belief. To see a recovered owl or hawk fly free is most wonderful...still, their life will be full of difficulties. Wishing the critters well. Thank you and the rescuer again.

I'm still recovering from the loss of Blackie, so I really feel for this fellow, too. I'm glad that man stopped and picked the fellow up. I'm also glad you have contacts who can forward injured animals to you. I assume it's his right eye that's gone as the eyelid is half down. I also wonder what brain damage he may have. That can be really devastating. Broken wing? Other injuries? Poor little fellow. I have often wondered, when taking care of an injured animal, how dangerous is the animal? It's in pain, yet can lash out, but does it? I would like to have more knowledge about this part of rehabilitation. PS - Kitty keeps going into the bath room to look at Blackies cage and sniff about. I think she misses him, or senses the emptiness, that he's gone. Thanks for your comment on my post.
