Description

This is the time of year we have a lot of young raptors come in. They get in trouble due to lots of reasons. Lots of these young ones get out on their own only to find out that finding enough food is hard. We spend a lot of time feeding these. Others come because of people that can't seem to exist without destroying something. Sadly, sometimes the injury is too great. Car hits are a big problem. So are useless people that like to use them for target practice. The fact that there is federal laws protecting these birds seems to make no difference to people. We do get to save a lot. This beautiful Red Shoulder hawk will be released soon. When I look in these eyes, I see such intelligence. I will be posting several pictures of these hawks so that you can see how much color variation there is in the same species.

Very lovely capture! I, as a hunter, cannot see the sense in killing or hurting a raptor. They are doing in a smaller scale of what I attempt to do in a larger scale (deer & Elk). vs mice and other small creatures. Besides they are so cool to watch soar in the winds....so majestic and regal. Wish I could rate this higher than a 5...

Awesome close up capture and story, love it and have seen a lot of these over the years in action. One even scared a bird into flying inside my apartment doors when I had left them open while I was outside filming a capture of the hawk devouring it's prey. The bird thought he was after him and I guess because I put out seed each day he thought I would save him lol. I like to have never got him to fly back outside even after the hawk had flown away, I also counted about a hundred or more of these hawks of different sizes and shapes as a passenger on a trip through the state of Arkansas years ago. I think that was the most at one time I had ever seen of these critters, lol. Nice capture!

Poor guy. Always say that homo "sapiens"? is the only species that kill and maim for absolutely no reason.

Such a penetrating gaze. He must be fascinated by that huge eye that's staring at him (camera lens). I think I see you in the reflection in his right eye. Intelligence - I wonder what he's thinking? And how is he incorporating this in all he has to learn in order to survive? I'm sure of one thing, he recognizes you and may well return for a visit or more. As for homo sapiens, I'm not so sure about the sapiens part. My brother, when disgusted with a fellow youngster, called them homo saps. I spent 1/2 hour with Blackie this evening after cleaning his food bowls and filling them with fresh food. Despite being all alone now, he seems to be doing well. He's been very busy reducing a milk carton to 1/5 its original size. So he's not going neurotic (at least not yet). But he knows I come every evening to talk to him and give him a treat. And while munching away, I tickle his back and rump. I love this little rattie! And Kitty's doing fine. Being a bit fussy with food right now. Lay ON my feet while I ate dinner. And no complaints when I went to feed Blackie. I once wondered what it would be like to have a raptor. MUCH work and training, but also devotion. I really love this photo. You got his character - serious, curious. Keep up the good work! :-)
