Description
Photographing so called fantasy creatures can be a real challenge. As any photographer who has attempted it knows, Fairies and Elves have almost no patience and it is extremely difficult to get them to sit still long enough to take their picture, even, as was the case for this render, when they are bribed with jelly beans, something Fairies and to a lesser extent, Elves can't get enough of. I managed to get Cadence, the Fairy in the picture, to sit still long enough for one quick shot. Unfortunately the 20 seconds or so that it took me to focus and snap the picture was too long for her and the camera caught her yelling at me to hurry up – altho her exact words were somewhat more colorful than “hurry up” and would not pass the RR censors if I printed them verbatim; who knew sweet little Fairies had such foul mouths.
A piece of advice to photographers: If at all possible discourage your Fairy or Elf from bringing their pet dragon to the photo shoot. As donnena correctly told me (and she has more experience at this than have I) “Dragons don't pose so good.” Besides that, they are too big to get inside the studio – we had to move this shoot outdoors – and to be frank about it, they stink. (I might add that photographing most breeds of dragons, as well as Goblins, and Gremlins is not recommended anyway because they are very dangerous.)
This prelude is my way of bringing up an issue that is troubling me and I am hoping my fellow RR artists (those who have actually read this far and are still with me) will help me out here: Namely, is it permissible to claim REALISM (as I have above) as the genre for this type of render or must it be listed as FANTASY?

It is definitely "Realism" because of all the work you had to do.... negotiate with the dragon, fairy, and so on. Where I come from, (Avalon, Newfoundland) we have a long tradition of having to deal with fairies, and they can be very volatile, even dangerous in how their moods change. This may be due to their experience of time as passing much more quickly than it does for humans. We often carry things to give to them as gifts if we meet them on a bad day..... Beautiful portrait. Next time have a hat, and keep it inside out, as protection... we find this works very effectively.

Thanks. I really appreciate any advice I can get in this matter, especially from some like yourself who has experience with dealing with Fairies. To be honest, my personal experience is very limited. I really was caught by surprise by how volatile they can suddenly become.

Nothing like the "fairies" they wrote about when I was a child, they can be fierce and very unpredictable when provoked. I see she has little tolerance for her pet when he misbehaves. Excellent! I would certainly classify this as realism.

Of course it's realism! When your mustache is in danger of ignition, it's REAL!!! It's not your fault Rendo doesn't have the appropriate categories! You'd think there would be a category for Naked Vickies in Temples, but no! you have to choose between Careers, Fantasy, and Historical. You'd think there would be a tick box for helium enhancement, too, but, no. Fairies also bite. I have a friend who's been successful (Carefully define the term!) with Fairy Photography by plying them with strong drink. He can take the photos without much danger, but his liquor cabinet is perpetually empty...... Lovely photo & Story!

Bite!? Thanks for that warning. And I'll give the drinking thing a go. I knew that worked with Leprechauns, but it's news that it also works with Fairies.

I would chose realism as well. ;-) She looks very realistic. This is probably the best render of her freckled skin. In other words, this one looks the most realistic. The Hair in this one too. I forget. What skin are you using here?? Great scene overall.

First, I live in California and we have faeries coming out of the wood work here and they will pose for you at the drop of a hat! Nuff said about that. The dragon looks like he is smiling. Well you never know what a dragon is thinking. I say put the posting in fantasy and realism, why split hairs or try to categorize. All in all, a very nice image.

You scored a fantastic hit again. Of course this is REALISM, what else? All the fairy stories I know, are in my head and that is the only real world I am aware off. The image is perfect. I don't like the smell of drakens too, but I love that breath of it here. Nice expression in her face like she is saying: "Hurry up, I can hold him forever" indeed.

Way cool.. though she does look fairily angry at something, and yeah Dragon's can be a drama, never mind the stink, their breath can be very toasty if they happened to sneeze at the wrong moment. Never minded Goblins myself, useful little creatures according to Terry Pratchett, but yeah gremins, get into everything and generally shag things up! Did I say excellent render.... :o)
