Description

The Diamond Dakota #1 The "Diamond Dakota..." was not in fact a Dakota. It was once this non-descript DC-3 airliner, PK-AFV, the "Pelikaan," with Royal Netherlands Indies Airways (KNILM). Passengers would probably not give it a second glance on an airport apron, it was a big silver DC-3, much like all the others you'd see at some point in your travels prior to WW2. But roll the years forward a bit, to March 2nd 1942, Java, when centuries of Dutch rule are about to end, when the airfield is littered with the wreckage of war and when the Japanese Army is only days away. You've got a box of diamonds in your pocket. Pelikaan, camouflagued and gutted of her seats, is all you've got... To be continued... Rendered in Poser 8 under a skydome Niewil's iconic DC3 (available at the usual place) and Neil's custom "Pelikaan" peace-time texture gratefully accepted ( plus his "Christmas hangars"- what a surprise they were. How did he get them in such a tiny box??? ;-) The period vehicles are from DAZ ps. The ground crew is probably discussing how to attach the floats...;-)

Talk about great minds, working on something a bit like this myself :) Very nice reflective surfaces and casual ground crew chatter make this a everyday believable scene!

Small detail for accuracy: This plane was named 'Pelikaan' in it's former life as PH-ALP with KLM.

When Germany invaded Holland, this plane was operating the KLM route from Napels to Batavia, together with several other KLM planes and crew. 3 of the DC-3 were bought by KNILM and got different registrations. PH-ALP became PK-AFV. And the name Pelikaan was dropped.

Several other DC-3's remained KLM property and were later operated along the Lydda - Batavia line flying passengers and Royal Mail. These planes were not reregistered. Just the PH prefix was changed to PK. These also kept their bird names. One plane that was en route (PH-ARB "Buizerd") ended up in England together with 4 other DC-3s and a DC-2. These remained KLM property and flew the Bristol - Lisbon line under BOAC charter during the war.
