Description

December 7/8th 1941. Pan-Am's "Philippine Clipper" was recalled to Wake Island by news of the unfolding Pearl Harbor attack. She was immediately fuelled up by the garrison for some impromptu maritime surveillence... just in time for the first Japanese air-raid!!! By some miracle this floating bomb survived the Nells and the strafing fighters with nothing more than a few dozen bullet holes... Knowing that the time for long boring patrols had passed, the clipper's crew aborted two tries to get airborne within the confines of Wake's anchorage, even stripped of its luxuries the M130 was quite overloaded with fuel and extra passengers. They made it on the third run- just- and were surely grateful they had no landing gear to retract!!! Captain john Hamilton and his crew more than earned their salaries that day.... Source: Robert Gandt 2010. "China Clipper: The Age of the Great Flying Boats." Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, USA. Rendered in Vue 8 Esprit. Models posed in Poser 8 and exported to Vue. M-130 model constructed in Shade 10.5. The Marine's helmet is a freebie from the World War II Headwear pack III (GaryChildress).

Hand on helmet ready to duck, great bit of history, as you say the crew earning their pay, but as so many others found out, the earning of it was easy, the hard part was living long enough to spend it! Great model and scene, the guy on the beach would not have been missed but adds so much to the image.Top drawer work....excellent!

Those magnificent flying boats of years past; Shorts Sunderland, Dornier DO-X and the Clipper. Good job and thanks for the tip on the Naval Institute Book.
