Description
Since it was on the way to Celuk we were able to stop at Goa Gadja. Dedicated to the Hindu god Ganesha, it is commonly known as the Elephant Cave and dates from the 11th century. Carved out of solid rock local legend says it was once the residence of a holy hermit. The fearsome creature that spans the entrance is said to be the Hindu god Pashupati, who divided the mountain Mahameru (Great Mountain) into two parts and, taking them in his hands, placed each half in Bali where they became the volcanos known as Gunung Agung and Gunung Batur.

The cave entrance does look a bit intimidating. I recall the mysterious goings on in the caves in 'Passage to India'

now many times i stopped on this road and look at this waterfall. most of the times the creek, streams an rivers cut down deep in the (sandstone) rocks and are not accessable or possible to cross. admire your memory, did you write down all the details of your trip ? because this waterfall is only a few hundred meters away from the cave.

Wonderful entrance, if that was around my property - that would keep all those hawkers at bay - looks like some rice terraces in the left pic ? Kudos for your travel-log presentation, BB

Those meddling gods. They do like to interfere. Poor mountain, minding its own business being great and swoop, it's two smaller mountains. No wonder they blow their stacks at times. Beautiful images! Absolutely wonderful POV on the first one. Amazing variety of landscape excellently captured. Superb detail of this fantastic carving! Great detail. Those must be Pashupati's fingers next to his head. Though if I look at his expression, I could think that they are his toes and he's thinking, "What are you doing over there?"
