Description
This dark rock caught my eye. It was nestled nicely in a groove of sandstone at my local beach. I would love to know how long it's been there. Has it been there for a long time, with the high tides carving a path around it? Or was it carried there by people recently? I tried to move it but couldn't budge it at all. Hmmmmmm! Are there any geology experts here who may know! Best viewed zoomed.

A meteor that size would have blasted the better half of the coastline in the area on impact. The surface to me looks like it might be a volcanic in nature, although they are not know for their weight. So two options spring to mind about the placement. Option 1; it was embedded in the sandstone when it formed, and the erosion over time has slowly dug it out. The surrounding sandstone will erode much much faster than the harden stone, but the harder stone will also have caused water to flow around itself, hence the back being "dug" out. Option 2; It has been moved to this location on the sandstone, some time ago, and erosion has forced the sandstone under and around it to wash away. Very similar to the first option, but this one can be a lot more recent, say within the last 200 years. Sorry for the long post BTW. Great pic. :-)

This is fantastic and it has a deliciously alien look to it, and what's not to like about that. As for how the rock got there, I suspect that it was always there and the little niche eroded around it as sandstone is good at eroding but not good at much else. I suspect it's a decent sized boulder that either rolled there or was deposited by other means, perhaps natural, perhaps not...but weather and wave action caused the little pocket to form around (and possibly under) it. That's my theory, but I only went so far as one semester of geology, back when I was a bit younger than I am now. This is a gorgeous shot! The colors and geological textures are outstanding, and I love the way that sandstone does such interesting things due to the fact that it's just so darn crumbly. Really great shot here.

That really is a pretty awesome shot, in quality, color and the randomness of it all. An alien projectile for sure =D
