Description
Since I was a small boy I have enjoyed tales of exploration and daring. Among my favorites are the diaries kept by early British explorers. The following story is absolutely true (mostly) so please read this with a somber tone in your best fake British accent. If you happen to be British you are welcome to use your own voice.
Expedition Journal – Day 24
On my voyage of discovery into the wilds of Southern Oregon I had stopped to investigate a crowd of people gathered at a viewing area overlooking the great lake known to the natives as Crater. As I approached I became aware of considerable commotion near the viewing area. Children were crying as frightened mothers carried them to safety. Others were frozen in place as they beheld the fearsome sight. A dangerous creature was prowling the area looking for something on which to feed. Warning signs had been posted announcing, “DANGER! KEEP BACK.” I, being more courageous than the rest, stepped forward hoping to capture an image of the vicious beast and perhaps help to end its reign of terror.
As I gazed upon the horrific face of the monster I am not ashamed to admit that, perhaps for the first time, I felt a primal terror. It was the Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel, a most dangerous animal. I was lucky to escape with my life.

Hehe the dangers of the outdoors. I stayed in Princeton New Jersey for a while when I was younger. Anywayz I was standing in the beautiful grounds of the university (I didn't study there just visited!) and one of these little guys was coming up to me. I thought he was very cute until the groundsman told me that he thinks he has rabies and thats something I DID NOT WANT!

Heah heah (trailing "r"s being ignored), quite right to risk it all in the endeavor to inform (I write in my best British written accent), as it were, for the benefit of others. This comment coming from Albertar (to which the British add an "r" to any word ending in "a"). That's my best written English accent, from the land where if the word ends in "r" it is never pronounced, but if a word ends in "a" then an "r" is added and pronounced. Just one more way of being divided by a common language, LOL!

Hmm...I read Whaleman's comment...is he speaking of England...or NEW England? Here you do not have an indea...you have an idear... But anyways, getting back to the picture...ai, the horribly terrifying ground squirrel...or as we call them here, chipmunks. I guess we shouldn't encourage them to eat from our hands then! Glad I found this out before our next camping trip!!! Nice capture, LOL!!!!

IT'S A RABBIT... ER ... SQUIRREL! Sorry it's hard to do Monty Python on a computer. That's not a ground squirrel it is a vorpal squirrel even worse than a vorpal bunny. Great shot and story.

Aha(r). We have the cousin of Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel at the Hollow. We call it "Chipmunk". Not quite as vicious, but highly abusive psychologically to the dogs. Perhaps I should post a Danger sign?
