Description

The USS Alligator, the first Union Civil War Submarine model I first did a number of years ago is now being reworked based on the latest information available by researchers. Additionally, I am going back and remodeling this effort to greatly reduce the polycount by almost 65 percent while increasing the interior detail based on new information. I will first release the new interior model for the Poser community and then having reworked the exterior hull model, re-release this two model package to the Vue community. Previous purchasers will get a free update. I think the Poser community should find this an interesting environment to use. New Details: Having access to the researchers now, I am both intrigued and surprised at the complexity of the Alligator. The new model will show the ballast tanks, egress chambers, pulleys, ventilation tubing, cabling to work the rudder, etc. For those who have seen my earlier interior scenes.. well it will be getting even more crowded. All those rivets.... When I originally modeled this... and it was my first, I had planned that each rivet was to be only 6 polygons.. but in the conversion to other programs that increased to over 40 per. Why do it.. well for me the sight lines in the interior are just too parallel with the sides and the rivets as bump map would just not provide the shadow and texture detail I want.

Boy, that's a lot of rivets. Knowing how you like detail, I'm sure this will be an excellent model. - Bob

Looks like a ton of work to me. Your attention to detail is amazing. Kudos to you for bringing this little-known bit of history to life. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Releasing it for Poser is a good move. Stonemason, etc usually do that because Vue can use Poser models but Poser cannot use the Vue models.

That kind of detail really matters, can't wait to see the finished product!

A lot of rivets are difficult to create without too many polygons. In Vue, I generally don't create the small rivets, just creating virtual rivets with bumps in the textures, using UV Mapper and drawings ( just black points on a white background ).

3DClassics is correct.. this would be the way to do this.. however I am willing to go the hard route to achieve the look I want in shadowing in these close quarters. A balancing game.
