Saturday afternoon the king of Sweden inaugurated the Malmö City Tunnel, a rail tunnel under the city, connecting the bridge to Denmark with the Malmö railway station. Yesterday (Sunday), the tunnel was opened to the public to ride the trains while all the tunnel's systems were being checked for proper functionality. Cost of a one week pass: 10:- Swedish crowns ($1.40 US, or about £1.-) - rediculously cheap! The new trains were being put through their paces, too. Some 10,000 people test rode the trains yesterday. I was at a late meeting in Malmö and decided to take the train from station Triangeln (shown in the photo) to Malmö railway station and the regular train from there to Lund, all to test ride the new system, to get home quicker, and to avoid a long walk to the bus station in very slushy weather. I almost missed the train's arrival to the station - it was SO quiet! The photo shows the train as it is slowing down to stop at the station. The trains are very beautiful and very modern inside. The ride was smooth, very quiet, and fast - scarcely 4 minutes to Malmö station from Triangeln station. This evening I took the train again, and got to stand (jammed among several other passengers) in the driver's cab, looking forewards into the tunnel, as she drove the train! Passengers in the driver's cab has never occurred before. I was initially rather sceptical towards the tunnel project, considering the costs for the gain of some 15 minutes, but am very impressed with it now. It was completed almost a whole year ahead of schedule, and has cost some one billion Swedish crowns LESS than expected! All my due respects to the designers and the fabulous construction crews.
