Description

I promised a while ago that would return to the mythological heights of the Olympian gods. I had wanted to do Poseidon as my next entry, but it took a while to get the chops up to deal with the water – and it still nearly had me down for the count! Water is a PAIN to render. Or at least, it is with my poor iMac. I could hear it chugging along like the little engine that could, but it still had trouble keeping up with the demands that water puts on the machine. After wrestling with it for nearly a week, with about 12 separate passes for the water, I managed to squeeze it out. *whew* This is just a custom rolled M4 with Cobalt Hierophant (DAZ3D) and Cista Sanctus (DAZ3D) with some tweaked water node work. Of course there is quite a bit of post-work to make it all gel, including hair, beard, and body hair painting, etc. There are buckets o' detail on this one, so I encourage you to view the large version by clicking on the image to see them all! I think my favourite part is the piercing, oceanic coloured eyes. I'd like to do some more with this figure, but man, it may have to be on dry land!

Wow, it is a real treat to see someone working on a classic mythological character and making a "splash" of it. This is a massively powerful Poseidon and I am not just talking of his muscle morphs. It all comes together right down to the period piece framing. One niave question. Why did you suffer so much trying to render water and splashes? I think it would have been easier and more contralable to use Ron's brushes and Flaming Pear's filters to make the water work. Just my suggestion.

Good question! I simply wanted to try doing water using node work and get the refractions and reflections. It worked, but was painful and I am seriously not sure if I'll ever do it again. Oddly enough, when I was test rendering small, it was not an issue, but as I need a larger image to work with to paint on, that was when things really bogged down! All in all, I'm happy I did it. I always attempt to do at least one thing I've never done before (no matter how big or small) with every new piece. This one was a test of water and the morph tool (for the Hierophant wrap). Glad you like the image!

That has got to be, bar none, one of the BEST personifications of Poseidon that I think I have ever seen! WOW! Magnificent effects, colour and lighting and really spectacular looking character. Just, honestly, absolutely breathtaking. And I agree with KnightWolverine, it would make a really great poster! ;-) Definately a favorite!
