Description

Docking with the Station Generic fuel pods fitted, NASAs new Orbital Shuttle Atlantis is docked by the two crew members to one of the three remaining docking ports on the International Space Station. With this final act the first of NASAs new orbital shuttle fleet is in position to start operations. Exactly one month later a crowd of over three-quarters of a million will watch the lift off of the Orbital Shuttle Discovery as it follows in the path of Atlantis and ends its journey docked to the station. One month after this one million people with gather to bid what could be a final farewell to the last of NASAs old space shuttles, the new Orbital Shuttle Endeavour as it follows in the path of its sister ships on a journey which will see it too successfully docked with the ISS. With this final flight completed, and the last of NASAs new Orbital Shuttles safely in Earth orbit and docked with the International Space Station, the first phase of Carters plans to take America back into space is completed, with the test phase of the next programme nearly ready to begin. Here ends the first series. To be continued. Author/Artists Notes Well that's the end of this first series and the first section of the story. I hope you have all enjoyed what you have seen and read and will be around when the next section of the story has its start in a few weeks time.

While I commend your creative presentation, I need to add that the Space Shuttle Orbiter is neither designed nor intended to remain on orbit for long durations and could not function in this role. No amount of system modification would permit this type of deployment – maintaining the shuttle on orbit is not merely a matter of extra fuel tanks, the amount of fuel is not the primary constraint. Critical Orbiter systems require extensive service and maintenance operations, operations which must be performed between each and every flight, or these systems will cease to function. Aside from the critical-system maintenance necessary, many systems and sub systems are configured specifically per mission – this is the nature of flexibility built into the Orbiter – re-configuration of systems along with required maintenance involves extensive dis-assembly of space craft components, the availability of specialized equipment and personnel, and extensive support facilities. Orbiter processing between missions involves between 1000 and 2000 tasks for about 10,000 to 16,000 individual work shifts –critical subsystem maintenance tasks require technicians with highly specialized skills, this involves a work-force which numbers in the thousands.
