Description
This is my son Ry at his cross country meet Tuesday evening. I know the picture is a little grainy and the lighting is not the best, but I wanted to share this with you. My son's determination inspires me.
Tuesday September 1st, 2009 6:50 pm as the sun was setting behind him.
All the area schools were invited to the neighboring city of Neenah. Ry was not feeling well, with everything going on here he has been a little stressed out lately. His stomach was upset. On top of that when they were running up hill he pulled a muscle. He did not give up and was determined to finish the race. Even with coaches from other schools and the sports medicine team following along on the outside of the coarse.
When I made it though the crowd over to Ry he had tears of pain running down his face. He said he came to finish the race, and that he was determined to do so. I am very proud of him. He was upset because he didn't place in the first five with the boys he started out with. I told him I was proud that he did what he was set out to do, finish the race. There is a meet tomorrow night, and Ry is going, but he has been side lined this race and will just be there to cheer his team on.
I asked Ry if I could post this before I did. I didn't want to put it on here without asking first. At first he said he didn't think the photos would turn out worthy, but I showed him and the determination on his face, and he said he would be honored.

Good lookin boy. I hated running. I played all sports except soccor and was pretty fast but I found running just to run was very boring. I have alot of admiration for people that can do it. Guess I just had short term goals....lol

Actually there's just a bit more to this, he had been feeling ill since last week Friday's meet, not eating much since, and everyone should know that running, not jogging, but running seven miles can really sap one big time. On top of this, he's been battling a bout of dysentery all that time too. This alone would lay most people up. So feeling completely like dog poop, this kid goes out and runs another seven miles on Tuesday. I am so proud of him!! Most people would've just sat this out, and not even tried. Ry not only ran, but finished strong. He had nothing left to give, feeling sick for days, pulling a hamstring at about the halfway mark in this race, he still found that something more. At about the last hundred yards Ry reached down deep from within, and literally willed himself to kick it up into high gear,....that final kick at the end that all great runners finish with. It's at this very moment that Cheri took this shot, the expression on his face says it all. He felt bad for not placing as well as he wanted to, all of the rest of us got to see what he was made of! The kid has heart, something, untrainable, uncoachable, something so few have.....but he does,....just like his mom!!

Cheri, you did your son proud with this shot, as he did you with his determined run. The picture is a little grainy, but more important than that is the capture of his pain and determination, and that, my friend, you nailed. How great to have such a perfect image of this moment. Very well done.

Super image...your son has his moms determination, and bravery. I wish him the best in his meets. Sometimes we have to push, push, push to get where we need to be, looks as if he has got an excellent start...He is a winner even if he does not cross every finish line in my book. Go Ry!

Great to see kids with that type of determination now a days ...sooo many teens here just want to drink and play around ...I would be very proud of him as well!!! Did he get his determination from mom? ..Bet he did ...Great job u 2!!!

Being someone whose employment is determined by fitness standards, I fully emphasize with your son and his determination. I run (not very well at my age) and I am determined to COMPLETE what I started. It's not easy most of the time. Nice picture!

This is a fantastic story and photo, and you've captured quite a lot in it--of course determination shows through, as does a glimpse of the adult Ry is becoming. That's always a good thing...I once heard (actually read) that you can tell what sort of man you're dealing with when you look at his face as he is either eating, sleeping, or engaged in combat...I wouldn't say that a cross country meet counts as combat, but it's close enough in the 21st Century. The expression on his face adds such drama and humanity to this photo, and the grainy, backlit quality is equally dramatic and compelling. This is great work!
