You created a great mood with the lighting and expression! I'm guessing you used a reference, I can't imagine doing something of this complexity without any.

Just came by...quite by accident. As an oil painting, this is photographically outstanding. The lighting is really fine. I spent a bit of time where you are in this pic...great to be beyond it completely now!!!

i don't think it looks photographic at all. even on a monitor, it has the richness and humanity of oil painting. it seems like everyone is impressed by the realism of your technique, but, imho, absolutely anyone who takes enough time can master realism. don't get me wrong, i greatly respect and admire you taking that time. but what totally impresses me is how you used the light to convey emotion, what you exaggerated and what you downplayed, and how that added to the image, and how all the colors and textures work together. what completely blows me away is the narrative the scene, the light, the expression and the pose create. it deftly raises the quotidian and banal to the heights of a very personal drama. it's a very honest painting, so the detailed individuality heightens its universality. in my experience, it's very rare to see work this strong, meaningful and personal (rather than just conceptual) online. thanks so much for sharing it.

Mid-life crisis? You planning on dying at fifty?

LOL - 40 is often seen as the age (in UK at least) when one really moves into middle-age (so hopefully another 40 yrs to come - who knows though). I'm 39 in that painting (believe it or not) so it's kind of my visual response to being at this stage in my life.
