Description

The Persian boy Bagoas and Alexander the Great's lover from childhood, Hephaistion, did seem to reach some sort of 'accommodation' before the latter's death, which was most likely caused by thyphoid, though it may have been poison. Alexander's grief was "uncontrollable" according to Plutarch. He lay on the bed for two days and nights, taking no food, alternately howling and "in the silence of grief". Some think he actually went mad at this point. Mary Renault depicts Bagoas, devastated and powerless before the scene; "Only one thing was wanting to my heart's death, that he should hate me for being the one left alive". The eventual funeral was like nothing recorded in history before, and likely, since, costing the equivalent of around $250,000,000. Yep, really. Six months later, Alexander died, one month short of 33 years of age.
