Description

Some tips for novice photographers of crowded events: recon the area in advance, gather intelligence from bartenders and shopkeepers, plan a strategy according to the terrain. Madrid and La Valletta, the capital of Malta, are two examples of different urban terrains. Madrid is an imperial city, with large avenues that can easily host any type of parades, either political, religious, or military. Give and take half an hour the head of the parade is in sight. The religious procession I posted was a sedate affair, with matrons and gentlemen stately progressing through the avenues, the crowd at the sides remarkably disciplined and courteous with the tourist. Malta is a rocky island moored in the middle of the Mediterranean, with a spicy Levantine flavor. The few straight streets of La Valletta are connected by narrow, crooked, stepped alleys, the crowds merrily mixing up with the performers of the Passion. The church I chose for its logistics (photo 1) opened at mid-alley, and the flight of steps steeply connected it at a right angle to the lower main street along the port, and the upper main street. The carriers of the statues, like those in photo 2, are usually burly fishermen inclined to bicker among themselves and the other statue carriers about the pace of the procession, and to shout back at their parish mates'jokes. The novice should remember, especially if s/he is not very tall, that choosing a higher position is more advisable than using a machete to cut down the heads of the tallest onlookers spoiling a shot. Usually people tend to get angry after the first slashes, and over-react. These photos were taken two or three years after that in Madrid.Thank you for your kind comments.

I must say the photos are fabulous and I think I enjoyed your insights into preparing for it just as much. Gotta remember to pack that machete next time I travel ;)

first, a great intro, funny, and I'm sure fine advice (I don't photograph, so I can only surmise), and you tell alot about these places in the process. Second, the shots are teeming, and they give the feeling of how teeming these rituals are. The sense of crowdedness in the first (left) along with that beautiful decayed wall, make a fine contrast & remind us that these rituals arise out of day to day life. And the second, with the four men, really does show the spirit of bickering & energy you describe, especially when contrasted with the angel and christ above. Fine captures; and really, fine to have views of these, since they're harder & harder to find (well in the States they certainly are) and because they're documents of a very basic part of the human experience. Thank you for sharing these. They're valuable on many levels...

Hai perfettamente ragione . bisogna sempre pensare e poi agire .( io uso la tecnica dell'uomo invisibile e immancabilmente mi trovo sempre in pole postion). Detto questo hai fatto un bel lavoro ,come sempre!
