Description
This week, Marilyn (BeachZZ), posted 'Into the woods' for Denise (MrsRatbag). Since they are two of the four women that have become my mentors, along with Andrea (DurleyBeachBum) and PJ (MrsLubner), I packed up the camera and headed out into the 400 acre Bald Cypress Swamp. No gator photos or birds either. Looking for moss, ferns, mushrooms and lichen.
We have a lot of air plants in Florida. They are in the Bromeliad family and are some times called Epiphytes. They attach to trees, buildings and even electrical wires. They are not parasites and take moisture and nutrients out of the air. Most of them are about the size of a human fist.
This is a Cardinal Wild Pine air plant and it is about the size of a childs car seat. It has attached to a Cypress tree and has a foot long red flower stem. You can also see some Spanish Moss hanging on the same tree. The gray spots, on the tree on the left, are lichen and I even managed to catch a little fern in this photo.
This cypress swamp in part of the 147,392 acre Loxahatchee National Wildlife refuge. That is about 596 square KMs.

Wow, what a rich place to explore! Fantastic wealth of plant life captured in this shot, and while I have seen bromeliads (always greenhouse-grown and used as accent plants in malls and offices) I've never seen this particular version. It's a beauty, and I can't imagine finding them growing out in the wild like that. Well done!

I'm speechless to know these grow wild there. I buy mine at the nursery and love them. Its so wonderful when I can bring the things I see every day to others with my camera and amaze them just like you are doing with your photos. Its in how you see it and not about what it is... You saw this beautifully.
Another Great Bromeliad picture nice to see Tillandsias in the wild, this one looks like T fasciculata, The Spanish moss on the trunk is also a Tillandsis. I can only grow them outside in the summer.
