Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera, hand-held image. This is the only usable shot I have of this species (Common Green Darner). It is one of the largest Dragonflies I see in my area. Unfortunately, this is the only time I have ever seen one perch. They fly endlessly and usually about 12-20 feet up in the air. I have seen them mate and lay eggs a few times, but that is done without slowing down. They just get very close to the water, lol. Unfortunately, I am sure this one was very near the end of its life (as was the Moth I showed in my last 4 postings). It is a male and he not only looked beat-up, he acted the same way with very feeble movements and almost no attempts to fly. He did manage to flutter to another perch when I got too close but it was beyond camera range and I left him alone. Classification Kingdom Animalia (Animals) Phylum Arthropoda (Arthropods) Class Insecta (Insects) Order Odonata (Dragonflies and Damselflies) Suborder Anisoptera (Dragonflies) Family Aeshnidae (Darners) Genus Anax Species junius (Common Green Darner) Size 68-80 mm Thanks to those who take the time to comment, Lee

I am glad you got the photo. I have been trying to catch one of the large blue dragons here and they fly in groups....like you said never landing. Excellent

Lee, I had one buzz by me in the garden last night. I saw him land! We have so many dragonflies but they NEVER land - preferring to fly about at 20 feet back and forth over the yard. I was so jazzed and got about 40 shots - it never moved and I dare say I might have been able to reach out and pet the dang thing if I had been wanting to touch it. Unfortunately, my shots didn't turn out nearly as good as this. I was too excited to hold still. :-)
