Last Autumn, I was priviledged to be invited, by The Elephant Family Charity, to do the PR Photography for an exhibition in Hyde Park,London. A very talented artist called Steve Manning had been commissioned by the Elephant Family Charity to create a whole herd of Asian Elephants. The idea was to position the herd, which included males females and babies, in amongst the trees by the side of the Serpentine Lake. It was such an eye-catching sight, to have this massive herd suddenly appear in the centre of London, looking for all the world as if they were eating leaves from the trees. It was to raise awareness of the plight of the Asian Elephants and the conflict between them and the human population in the elephant's natural habitat. As man has built towns and villages where elephants once roamed free, the natural corridors linking the feeding grounds have become cut off and the elephants, in their fight to survive, have become a 'nuisance' (not sure what we call us humans!!!)to the local populations. So man and beast are at war and the elephants are being slaughtered (and vice versa people, when they get in the way). The Asian elephant will become extinct if nothing is done to ensure man and beast live in harmony. The Elephant Family charity is an organisation addressing this issue. Having this herd of wicker elephants in the middle of London, hemmed in on all sides by the built environment was symbolic of what is happening in real life in India. I spent the month of September working in London with the charity doing the PR photography while the exhibition was on, but before the herd left the artist's studio to be transported to Hyde park, I went and did a series of pictures. This shot against the sky was one of them which I then did as a mirror image to make it more eye-catching.
