Description
This is the rear of the train. Five engines in the front is about the maximum. I did not count the cars, but the trains usually have 100 to 120 cars and they are about a mile long. What surprised me was that this train had an engine at the rear. I never saw this before on this line. The tracks run more or less parallel to the old Route 66 and I-40 throughout Northern Arizona, a couple hundert yards off, sometimes a couple or three miles, and they occasionally cross the freeway over the course of about 350 miles. In the Western part of Arizona, west of Seligman I-40 takes a shortcut, but the rail and the old Route 66 stay together. Route 66 was for decades the main east-west corridor in this part of the country. It was made famous by John Steinbeck's novel 'The Grapes of Wrath' wherein he describes the exodus and subsequent hardships of the dustbowl inhabitants, mostly Oklahomans, on their way to the promised land-California-in the 1930's.
Once the freeway was completed it made Route 66 obsolete, and the towns that once thrived fell on hard times. But there is still evidence of the old days in towns like Holbrook, Winslow, Ashfork, Seligman, and Kingman. Anyone that has the time should drive the two-lane macadam rather than the freeway, it is much more enjoyable and romantic, and seeing these long trains moving along just adds to the enjoyment.

İts a beautiful capture, I love it....
I see that this isn't long enough to need locomotives in the middle, especially in this relatively flat country. This is such a great view, Sig; I'm sure many people don't think of Arizona ever being snowy. Congratulations on your hundredth upload.
