Cleared For Takeoff by Denger

"Longeviti Prime Downport, a frontier installation... that means it's not really much more than a flat spot at the bottom of a crater. Hardly big enough to be considered a Scout Base, the small, four room Ledcrete™ building and its accompanying antenna array are the only indicators of any human presence on this world. A single Scout Administrator is stationed on Longeviti, along with two to three auxiliary 'bots. Despite the spartan living arrangements, this Scout Admin's life is not a dull one: on the contrary, her work is constantly varied and (seemingly) never-ending. Some of her duties include monitoring geophysical events and suborbital traffic, maintenance and repair of the comm/nav and robotics equipment, routine customs checks, even manually directing the landing and departure of vessels calling here at the Downport, (as you can see). I suppose it must be somewhat akin to the life of the nautical lightkeepers in the days of yore when ships crossed the gulf of oceans on a single world rather than the gulf of spacetime between many worlds. One of the few perks of travelling in the Frontier Worlds is a certain informal familiarity which is general among the people you meet out here. For instance, on this trip, the Admin served us up a rare treat — fresh brewed koffi, prepared according to the ancient Terran tradition, in an autodrip carafe. I can assure you, nothing in the worlds can compare after weeks of tired shipboard fare! Our delivery made, it was soon enough time to be off on our way again. There was just enough time to actuate this exposure before we prepped for takeoff. I had told our host I'd have a surprise for her, which I would transmit as soon as we were orbital. Luuïsa, this one's for you."
