Description

As sons and daughters depart for the city, farms across the country fall into disrepair and eventually are sold. Often the "Prodigal Son" returns to the old homestead to find it in ruins, if even standing. I played around with this idea a bit, finally settling on a triangular layout that "points" toward the son -- and also a little play on the English words with the "sun" setting next to the returning "son." Since this picture is based on the Biblical story (Luke 15: 11-32), I placed a "Trinity" of birds in the sky which also help complete point of the triangle so its side can "point" toward the prodigal.

It speaks volumes Duncan... beautifully simple in look, yet rich and deep in the colors, lighting and textures. the pose of the young man bespeaks sorrow to see his old home... Wonderfully done and most evocative...

Ahem... "complete THE point of the triangle." Glad I don't make my living as an editor of my own work :o)

Lovely designing and true of a lot of these small towns. Not many stay , finding greener horizons farther away in the bigger cities. Sad and wonderfully well designed !!~**~!!

You've nailed the look of weathered wood just perfectly on that barn and the lone farmer standing near is adds some human interest. Symbolism aside, this is an excellent composition.

Nice reflexion time for conception of your picture, as talentuous painters. What seems as easy as intuitive is finally a toughfull construction and symbolism that highlight the significaton of what is to be seen. Your explanation gives us the meaning that enhance the beauty of your picture. Full respect !!!

The birds over the building and its strong shadows and angles also gives it a slightly threatening feel too - difficult times ahead perhaps ?

Ironically The first image I viewed in your gallery you were very despondent about the way your life/art was shaped by people of lesser talent and vision just power of dosh, when I viewed this one it struck me that this might be a subconscious retort like the Parable of the Prodigal Son, you have returned. I personally just viewing your gallery feel grateful you chose the lesser and with great compassion and deliberation gave them the finger.. Chris
