Description

And as the day came they became aware of a fighting-machine standing near by the Langham and looking down at them.

Seen nearer, the Thing was incredibly strange. Machine it was, with a ringing metallic pace, and long, flexible, glittering tentacles swinging and rattling about its strange body [...] and the brazen hood that surmounted it moved to and fro with the inevitable suggestion of a head looking about. Behind the main body was a huge mass of white metal like a gigantic fisherman's basket.

Heaven knows how long he had been there. It must have given some of them a nasty turn. He came down the road towards them, and picked up nearly a hundred too drunk or frightened to run away.

Strange as it may seem to a human being, all the complex apparatus of digestion, which makes up the bulk of our bodies, did not exist in the Martians. They were heads - merely heads. Entrails they had none.
They did not eat, much less digest. Instead, they took the fresh, living blood of other creatures, and injected it into their own veins. I have myself seen this being done. [...] Let it suffice to say, blood obtained from a still living animal, in most cases from a human being, was run directly by means of a little pipette into the recipient canal...
The bare idea of this is no doubt horribly repulsive to us, but at the same time I think that we should remember how repulsive our carnivorous habits would seem to an intelligent rabbit.

A Martian has only to go a few miles to get a crowd on the run. And I saw one, one day, out by Wandsworth, picking houses to pieces and routing among the wreckage. But they won't keep on doing that. So soon as they've settled all our guns and ships, and smashed our railways, and done all the things they are doing over there, they will begin catching us systematic, picking the
best and storing us in cages and things. That's what they will start doing in a bit.
Lord! They haven't begun on us yet.

H.G. Wells 1898 "War of the Worlds"

If you want to learn how I made this scene, visit "SCENES" section of my website (I am still working on the "Making of the Men Hunting" - so some elements are missing yet, and it may happen that page don't open due to transfer limits - if it occurs, just try later.

To build the 1900 London I used mainly Alain Gracia's buildings (available at Cornucopia 3D), Poser 4 Low Polygon man & horse, narwik's bridge, Bernard Dumas Renault G, and some other stuff from the net (more credits & links on my website)

If there is something you would like to know about this scene that is not mentioned on my website's article, just let me know - as I said I am still working on it, so I can add some further explanations.

I hope you will like this picture.

Take care :-)

Robert

As I am late to post a comment I can only mirror the previous words written in saying that this rocks, but it's the sort of brilliance I've already expected to come from you. Fantastic!

This is truly the epitome and ultimate represenation of the words 'intricate details'! To have all this going on in one scene, and for everything having a purpose and reason to exist, it's just incredible to the senses...even after staring at the image for awhile! Just to setup the scene must have been a full time job, but to convey the panic of the people and the destruction the machines wreak in real time is astounding, and your attention to the most minute details really intrique me! It's truly a treat to view this masterpiece and you raise the bar and show us what is even remotely possible with dedication and today's consumer hardware and software! Absolutely insane and breathtaking perfection!

Excellent work. Superbly thought out. But this piece begs me to ask "Who copied who"? Though I agree this is a splendid depiction of the alien tripods (definitively pointing out certain H.G. Wells' descriptions), they're also strikingly similar to the more recent Spielberg film (though there are differences [the "cockpit" area of the head is different for example] and it's set in a different time period). Yet I see next to nothing of the "old" design of the 50's film. Did you take a Q from the Spielberg film in your design, or did you make this piece before the film's release (in which case, I'd consult an attorney LOL).? Good work though. I totally dig it.

Scav74, you should take a look on others pictures from Robert's gallery, then you would notice that his Martian Tripods were publishes for the first time before Spielberg's movie was released!

Sometime it happens that similar results are obtained independently. Martian War Machines used in this picture and two previous scenes (Thunderchild & Black Smoke) were designed in the spring 2005 (April - design concept hand drawn pictures, May walker 3D modeling, June Thunder Child ship modeling, end of June final scene setup in Vue) When I watched Spielberg's movie I was amazed that his team had such similar idea for War Machines. However it was impossible that they could be inspired in any way by my models :-) So no need to consult lawyers ;-))

Stunning masterpiece Robert! I appreciate the whole composition - the bridge makes a great frontier between upper part dominated by Martian machines and bottom - the city. Merits a great Vote! Excellent Picture!

I think there's a great problem with renderosity , your render is probably one of the best ive seen with vue, but i always see AWFUL RENDERINGS from other guys that gets votes from the community and this is not acceptable, mr agiel how can you accept showings us bad tastes , bad compositing, bad lighting etc in the vue hot 20 dont you see that these votes arent fair? I know you probably think that its good for your business (renderosity guys) but you're killing real artists by the way you can ban me as usual

Yeah rastlin62 is right - a lot of scrap gets excellent ranks here, and real artists flee to CGTalk. Thank you Robert for posting your artwork here.

VOTE!!!!!! Definitely the most abso-effing-lutely monst incredible image I've seen on Rendo this year! Hell, this might be one of the very best images I've seen here since I first wandered in. A wonderful piece of illustration. Make sure you submit it for inclusion in the next SPECTRUM art collection, as it will be a shoe-in!
