Subject: how to change viewport color

GatormanCL ( ) posted Fri, 28 January 2011 at 5:14 PM · edited Tue, 12 May 2026 at 10:48 AM

is there a way to adjust the transparency of the view port?  for example, when you go into render settings and change the output resolution, i.e. 275 x 150...  In the viewport it then shows two, (or maybe 4) transparent sections above and below to show what will not be rendered to picture viewer.

The reason i ask is bc in certain views the transparency doesn't help bc the scene is too dark for example.

Yes, you can change this setting. Go the viewport settings and look around in there. I don't have access to Cinema at the moment so I can't tell you precisely where to look, but it can be done.

Hi Gatorman,

here are screenshots of my R12, how to adjust the display style and coloring of those borders:

Either change "opacity" and "color" of those border areas. (Screenshot at the bottom.)

Or display colored lines instead of these semi-transparent areas:

To Display the lines:

  • Select a Viewport
  • Select its menu "Edit" > "Configure" (or "Configure all" if intended)
  • Tab "View"
  • Disable(!) the checkmark at option "tinted border"

To Change the color of those lines:

  • C4D program menu "Edit" > "Preferences"
  • "Scheme Colors" > "General Colors"
  • "Film Format". (Select your color, whereas I prefer a dull orange here, with RGB 255 170 25)

Hi Gatorman,

glad to help. :)

It is always a hassle to search for that setting/option. In my case usually once per year after an Upgrade, g. They are imo not easy to find in the Online Help, when not knowing the exact keywords. So I will keep a copy of my screenshot in my C4D work folder now!  ;)
