Subject: Gallery vs. Forum

Bobasaur ( ) posted Fri, 20 May 2005 at 4:19 PM · edited Mon, 16 June 2025 at 5:32 AM

I spent a little while this afternoon checking the gallery of someone I've known for years via forum interaction. My impression of him from his gallery confirmed my impressions of him from forum interactions. I'm not talking so much about artistic skill as what his art was about - the thoughts, the humor, etc. it depicted. Do you ever compare someone's gallery with their forum interactions to 'get to know them?" If their gallery suggests a different personality than what you expect from forum interaction, how much does that change your view of that person? Which is a truer depiction of someone - the works they produce or the words they post?

"Which is a truer depiction of someone - the works they produce or the words they post? " I think we're talking two different parts of the brain here. I know I switch over when I go from writing fiction or essays, say, to when I'm doing visual art. On the other hand, if someone is being a complete jerk about an artistic matter-- or confusing art and morality-- well, I do want to see if he or she does any art at all or if this is blowing smoke. Why? Cause an opinion that comes from experience counts more to me. There's another issue as well. We are a multinational forum and our posters often are using a language with which they have no facility. I think it's bogus to trash anybody for not being able to state a clear case in a foreign tongue. I couldn't do much more than say, hello in Spanish or French and I could even do that in Ukrainian or Greek. In those cases, words can betray you easily. Most of the time humor can come through but even then, a foreign language can make a joke seem harsher than it really is. Emily

I'd say both.

Human beings are complicated creatures -- with oftentimes conflicting internal impulses.

I've seen "nice guys" display a cruel streak......and I've seen some not-so-nice types have (admittedly rare) bouts of guilt.

It happens.

But I'd advise steering clear of attempting to psychoanalyze people based upon their online persona.

That cute 19-year-old model might actually be 53 -- and fat -- and male..........

Not really. Most people have diverse personalities and while some may reflect that in their art style, or choice of art genre, some don't.

Ain't no difference with me. Whst you see is what you get, words and pictures. Anyone who is so disjointed between who they are here or in their galleries has serious problems, IMO. Art is - or should be - about some sort of truth, and that includes telling lies in an entertaining way. Which is what I hope most of my images are. I only tell lies. ;)

I think a true visual artist can express a deeper truth through their art... as in "a picture is worth a thousand words". In a forum, we might be provoked one way or another by what or how someone else communicates with us. But in our art, it is a soul expression of ourselves.

Ha Ha......I must be schizophrenic!!!!!!!!!!!! My gallery is just a place to post things that I enjoy creating or pictures that I take which I just like. There's not rhyme or reason to it. I don't know how my posts sound. I guess I'm a bit of a jokester but sometimes, people don't realize that I am joking. Cassete...Hamster Art Creator.....I'm just joking about feeding the hamster to my snake! BTW, I'm seeing Star Wars on May 28!

My gallery images seem to be careful and thoughtful; there really isn't anything which is amusing or full of bad puns... yet. Carolly

If someone just checked my gallery, they's only see a very small part of me. If they checked my animations they'd see a much bigger part of me. Ya'll don't have access to my music so you don't see that part of me. My writing (at least those of you that have read my posts for an extended period of time) is probably the most complete and accurate reflection of who I am. I express myself differently according to the medium.

Attached Link: http://homepage.mac.com/kflach/first.html

The only music I've got available online at this time is that which is in my animations. Most can be found at the link . In addition to those, there is "Spew" (my first animation) http://homepage.mac.com/kflach/media/Spew.mov and my Star Wars grocery store knock-off that I did for a convention in Chicago: http://homepage.mac.com/kflach/media/KevPodS3 ---All animations require QuickTime and all are below 5Mb in size.-- If you go to the linked page, be sure and watch me bang my brains out (link at the bottom).
