Subject: Mist/fog textures, what do you use?

I use Peter Sharpe's mist texture. You can find it under tutorials on www.petersharpe.com if you are interested. The above image is probably the best utilization of this texture that I have done. Just out of curiosity, what you do you guys use?

Kemal ( ) posted Mon, 09 May 2005 at 2:22 AM

Lot of times I actually use volumetric textures, which in my opinion looks better, but render times are often sky high, expecially on volumetric slab object. My personal favorite is GreySmoke one ! :D

shinyary2 ( ) posted Mon, 09 May 2005 at 2:33 AM

That's the beauty of Peter Sharpe's texture. It looks good but renders very fast. And did I mention that it's volumetric? Yeah, the volumetric defaults take FOREVER. I hate to think what MarioG's renders must be like on occassion (assuming he uses volume clouds for his skies).

Kemal ( ) posted Mon, 09 May 2005 at 2:37 AM

Oh, I do not use them on original settings, always tweaked to my speed/quality liking, I do not mind long renders, if by forever you meant 1 month, yep that is too much, but I did some which took week or two, I render everything on my laptop so it is not a problem ! :D

shinyary2 ( ) posted Mon, 09 May 2005 at 2:41 AM

Yeah one month is a bit long. One week is too long in my opinion. Although Lord knows I've done a few of those as well.

Dann-O ( ) posted Mon, 09 May 2005 at 2:47 AM

I use a tweaked wispy cloud volumetric for mists and the like. soem others I like are black tire smoke. I just play with the settings until I like them.

I use combinations of VanLippe's wonderful volumetric textures, and some of my own. One look into those textures, back in 2002 or whenever, and I learned volumes about the DTE. I usually try his first, and if they don't look right, I just make a new one from scratch...

I will first try using tweaked versions of the non-volumetric .mat called "Lint" first (under Clouds & Fogs) I can usually make it look fairly good, and if it looks acceptable, its gonna end up rendering WAY faster than volumetric .mats AS

Then again, sometimes you can get away with just standard, Skylab-style mist and fog. I did this a few years back from a postcard someone sent me. I thought it interesting and tried the scene in Bryce, which actually turned out pretty close to the photo! (maybe not in quality, but in style and placement of matter...)

I'm very fond of that low lying mist you get over water in evenings and mornings. For that I start out with Meski's Filament Fog which is a flattened sphere and I think it's blue smog preset. I spent forever tweaking it to get it patchy how I wanted it for this image then lost the whole scene before backup in a major hard drive crash last year. I guess I was lucky to only lose the one but I'd put a lot of work on the mountain texture too so I was a bit pissed (off -uk usage;) I'm interested to read of those of you who are getting such good results with render speeds though because that image I linked to took a huge amount of time to render! I shall doubtless be experimenting with the hints you've given here, thanks :)

shinyary2 ( ) posted Mon, 09 May 2005 at 4:22 AM

Kathye, your mist looks great. AS, I'm the same way with Peter Sharpe's mist. I've never had to switch to something else with his, though--just tweak colors and density and such. And I find it renders nearly as quickly as regular materials. LSD, I personally like to use PS's mist alongside the skylabs settings. I did this for the mist in my entry to the challenge this month, you know, the one with the tiger? Works fairly well, in my opinion. =)

Well either i am as blind as a bat or someone removed Peter Sharpe's mist texture from the Tutorials at www.petersharpe.com for some silly reason i can't find it in any of his tuts.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

It's not a download CrazyDawg, just a tutorial including the settings to make your own.

Thanks Kathye, i'm glad it wasn't a download i couldn't see. I started feeling silly lol

gad, I'm usually trying to get rid of mist and fog, so the details show up..;) I have ideas, but that would require actually following the directions in the tut..;)

What, and miss out on all the fun? =)

FranOnTheEdge ( ) posted Tue, 10 May 2005 at 8:37 AM

I find I use "Tea Kettle Steam" more than anything else but I have to tweak it a lot first. But that's for dense mists around the base of something, not scattered around the landscape - haven't done so much of that, but would like to. Hey LSD! did you send me those fogs and mists you were going to send me? I might have forgotten where I put them with all the hassle with downloading Bryce5.5 and the house move before that... I know you sent me something a good while back... (wondering where I put it) I'll have to take another look at the PeterSharpe tut, I see that I already have it saved...

I'll re-send those materials for ya, Fran... I think I still have your email, no worries...

shinyary2 ( ) posted Tue, 10 May 2005 at 9:22 AM

LSD, your mist/fog is VERY nice. Any chance I could get those textures as well?

FranOnTheEdge ( ) posted Tue, 10 May 2005 at 4:47 PM

Thanks Oh great Lord. If I did get them I sure can't find them. So thanks mucho.
