Subject: Need help converting .max to .3ds or .obj

ghst32 ( ) posted Sun, 20 June 2010 at 9:56 AM · edited Sun, 15 March 2026 at 6:43 PM

I have a .max file that I need to convert to either .3ds or . obj and I dont have or use 3d studio max.  Is there a way to convert it without using max, or can someone help me make the conversion?

If you have a fast internet connection you can download a fully functional 3dsMax demo (see link at the top of this forum).

I tried, and couldnt get it to work

Uh...you simply open the .max file in max and export as whatever you want from the drop down list. I did this recently when I found a bunch of free max veg I wanted and it worked flawlessly.. ...

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

You can buy the max bible and you get the demo free look on ebay for the bible you can get the bible cheap or second hand on amazon make you get get the lastest one i think thats 2010 but if you don't want to spend your money you could always upload a link where we can download the file from your .max file and someone can export it as an OBJ. edit make sure you tell us what version of max  you have

Id rather not have to spend money on max merchandise since I dont even use max and Im only just trying to convert 1 object out of max format.  I can post the file if anyone is interested in converting it for me, it would be greatly appreciated.  It was made with max 2009 I believe.

The file can be downloaded above if anyone is interested in converting it for me.

You must have installed it incorrectly or something...I'd uninstall it and then, after a reboot, try again unless the demo limits the number of attempts...best I can suggest unless a Max owner wants to offer to convert them for you...My demo ran out a month ago or I'd offer.. ...

Best I can tell, it only runs under windows.  I run OS X.

Hmmm... I thought I was pretty clear about not using max in my first post, sort of superseding any need to give system requirements and such for running it.  At any rate, Im only interested in getting a file converted to something  can use, not running max.  Thanks to anyone who can help me.

You need to relax and wait to see if anyone can export that file if i had 2009 i would do it but i dont,  if you need it done fast then ask someone in the autodesk fourm. people are trying to help. maybe if the infomation is unless then stop replying and give it sometime. what software are you using? you should able to import the .max file into the software your  using you may need to search online for a tutorial

I dont know for a fact that it was made on 2009.  If you would be willing to try it I would appreciate it.

So you have tried it and you can confirm that it was made in a version of max above 2008?  Well thanks for at least attempting it.

thenodemaster ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2010 at 12:19 AM

Not sure if this will work--sorry, rebuilding my WS right now, and I use 2008--have you tried possible merging from the file into a new file in Max?  I will see what I can do when I get my station back together.

I understand that he cannot use max in OSX.  I was more asking the other person who had tried opening the file in Max 2008.

No, merging it doesn't work either.

I'm coming late to this discussion, sorry.

I have the file open and it's missing the back wheels of the car and there is no interior.

The materials are all vray materials with a few maps missing.

Otherwise it looks good.

Do you want it exported as one mesh or 96 objects as it is now? I'm not sure what your requirements are.

Let me know

thank you so much.  I would prefer to have it as the 96 separate objects please in .3ds or .obj or one of each just in case.

pixelwks ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2010 at 4:47 PM

OK

I have uploaded both files.

They are pretty large 12mb & 23mb.

The meshes lost the materials and smoothing groups when I exported, so you will have to do some work.

Good luck.

Don't know why.

This link works if you right click and "save link as" on either file name.

Im sorry to make this so difficult, it just wants to save a html link to the page instead of the actual file when I try to do it.  Im really not sure why its doing this.  I dont need to have special access or anything do I?

pixelwks ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2010 at 7:30 PM

Hmmm this is odd.

I think the "save link as" problem is a Mac thing.

I can't get the original links to work either though.

If I figure this out tonight (it night here) I'll send you an email.

Sorry about the mess up.
