Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2026 Apr 10 4:02 pm)
Hello :) I'make most of my models in Max so I would be very happy to help you but here I cannot figure out what is the problem :(. Did you collapsed the hierarchy of your elements in Max before to export to obj ? It generally help a lot to have a predictable result - booleans and extrude behave sometime a little bit odd when exported as obj :). For the hood, I would export it separatly and then make another copy in max with the final position (only moving vertex of course :)) that I would use in poser as a morph target. If you can give me more infos, I will try to help you more, just limited by my knowledge and the languages :) J-L
Hi Abraham thank you for wanting to help. The thing is that I am very confused about the whole process. By collapsing the hierarchy do you mean to ungroup all the elements or to collapse the modifier stack? I've grouped the cach by part, for ex the wheels with the spokes and then these group with each oter and so on. Is this inacceptable in poser? Anyway my main concern is to keep the materials as applied in max and to make a clear texture map template using UVmapper, is there any way to do that? seeker
:) yes, I mean to collapse the modifier stack so you export pure mesh. You don't need to attach the part together, you can keep them grouped as you did, the only important thing is that all pieces are meshes. Very important too : you must be sure that all pieces are "real", I mean if for exemple you made the spokes as an array, you must be sure that they are copy, not instances or references, otherwise they wont export :(. The materials export without problems, even if you apply many materials to a unique mesh, they will still export perfectly to poser :) For exemple, on the little cube here, each color is a different material on a unique mesh, it would import perfectly in Poser, with all materials assigned
I see,I didn't know about the instances and references part. Is there any way to convert the instances to real objects? It will be very, and I mean very, time consuming to replace them with copies. I'll try that right away I hope this works. Azl I use max2obj plugin and I group by object. Then I check rotate, polygons, texture coordinates smooth groups and vertex scale 1. seeker
OK I've made the objects real and exported. Everything worked fine with the import until I turned the model around and then the sides disapeared and the after turning again they reapeared. I tried inverting the normals of the disapearing parts in both max and poser but nothing works. In rendering the parts render normally. With the map and the hood morph ready this is the only problem I have. If I don't solve it soon I'll probably give it up. I almost reached my limit. If anyone wants to try it out i'll be glad to pass a copy of it to him/her. seeker
Don't give up, you made a really nice work :) Try to check the "make normal consistent" checkbox in the Poser import dialog, it might help :) If you really cannot fix it, I would be glad to get a copy of the 3DS file, find what is wrong (or at least try), and send it back to you, fixed with explanations on what was "wrong") :) The first prop I did, I was also more than once esesperate. I could model without to much problem in Max and I though I would import in Poser without difficulties but... I'm always very sad when making a model to be obliged to cop with the limitations imposed by Poser. It's a wonderful soft in his branch but not really friendly to imported object. The best is always to bring Poser to the world (importing your character in another application) rather that to try to bring the world to Poser :) But, it's true, when you want to share with People who use poser, you have to strugle with the communication problems (like me when I tyr to express myself in English ;) ) Don't give up, you're on the right way :) J-L

Hi The above picture is my third attempt at modelling. I made it in 3D studio Max R3 but I really want to convert it into a poser posable cr2 or pz3. Could someone please give me any hints, I have no idea what to do. I exported it as an obj but when I insert it into poser most of the parts don't show up,even when I invert the normals, and its a single piece with one single material although every part in the max file is different, even the wheels spokes. Also I'd like to make the hood roll back with a morph target, any hints on that? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you seeker
