THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Mobius Strip

I'm trying to create a mobius strip in Bryce (well, a mobius ring atm). For those who don't know, a mobius strip has only one side, and can be made by putting a twist in a strip of paper and connecting the ends. Working with metaballs seems to do the job ok, but it's very chunky with too few metaballs. Anyone have any other suggestions? I tried it in wings but mangled it terribly. Mahray

A different view, showing the very chunky metaballs.

I've got a figure 8 version of the strip in my freebies. Also it's not terribly hard to do in Wings, you just have to figure out the math right (Twist has to go 180 as strip cross section is revolved 360.) Easy to do if you set a default axis, extract a face for the strip cross section, and go from there. The metaball way might work too, you probably just need to make pairs of them side-by-side to form the "cross section".

wings can do it, you just need a lot of patience. and you could always make it using just cubes and cylinders in bryce. drac (s&m)

Why is it when someone tries doing something or wants to do something in Bryce most of the replies to their post either tell them you can do it in this program or another and i have it in my freebies. That doesn't solve or help anyone wanting to learn or do things with Bryce in my opinion. Sorry all but it tends to get a bit annoying to those of us that want to learn Bryce and do things in it and the only thing we get told is what i mentioned in the above.

Attached Link: http://uqconnect.net/wasteland/weird_thingy.html

I made it by doing how Mahray said it was made. Get a bit of virtual paper (a rectangular polygon with a lot of segments in it), twist a part of it, and join the ends up, but this wasn't done in bryce - buggered if I know how to do it in bryce.

You might be able to do it in bryce using some very carefully placed booleans... but I don't think so - though I'm quite willing and happy to be proven wrong.

Anyway, theres the link to the thing I made earlier tonight. You'll need to import it using file>import. Yours (or anyone elses) if you/they want it.

Flak - Looks like it was made in lightwave? (from the file format). I will keep working on it in Bryce, but it might help having that for a reference. Completely OT, but I haven't seen a uqconnect address since I moved up the coast. Nice to know I'm not the only Aussie on here :)

I found this one by Pefo in free stuff here last year when I was working on a poster for a band I was in at the time...

Yeah, a very very old version of LW (but bryce loads its files pretty easily) - I find boolean modelling in bryce pretty difficult (and always have), though its terrains and symm lattices are damn handy for certain things.

. . . take a length of newspaper. . .2" x 14" will do. . . .put a half turn twist in it so it looks like the pics in this thread . . . .place the ends together and secure with tape.. . now you have a Mobius strip.. . . but. . . now take a pair of scissors and cut your Mobius strip in half straight down the middle of the loop . . . surprise! surprise! What's this before my eyes??? Two halves equal a whole is definitely applicable in this case!

Mahray ( ) posted Mon, 27 September 2004 at 8:55 PM

You can also try putting two twists in and cutting in half, or starting a cut a third of the way in :)
