Subject: 3D file viewer recomendations???

notefinger ( ) posted Thu, 20 May 2004 at 10:27 AM ยท edited Tue, 30 June 2026 at 10:03 AM

Can you recomend any 3D file viewers that can see .car formats. Any free viewers?

TOXE ( ) posted Thu, 20 May 2004 at 10:43 AM

Mhh, i think that there aren't 3d viewers for .car format. For now .car format is not a standard. But, what do you need? Maybe there are other solutions... -TOXE

Any good 3d viewer will do. Which would be the best format to save a model in? Is there something special and unique about the .car format?

.car file format is familiar to Carrara only. It is a proprietary file format.

notefinger, As you know, .car format is Carrara's scene format rather than an object format like .obj and so .car might be strictly proprietory to Eovia. I don't know of any viewers that view .car ever though there are a few that use older lightwave scene format. I wouldn't count on finding .car viewers other than in Carrara. However, you might ask Yarp via Instant Message;(PDO Viewer) he seems to spend a lot of time with various graphics formats and if anyone would know it would be him. - TJ

Microsoft, INTEL, Apple, HP, SUN, AutoDesk, etc. are all working on a universal 3D file format so any app can view/edit 3D models. I think it's called .U3D?

Any file views that will work well with the more common 3d file formats

sailor_ed ( ) posted Sat, 22 May 2004 at 6:54 AM

There is a 3d file viewer that does the more common model files like obj, dxf, 3ds etc. It also does all the usual image files. It's called 3D Photo Browser (www.mootools.com) and there is a free version. Worth checking out. ED

I looked at that one (3D Photo Browser)and I wanted it to work but it gave me a 3D image on only a few of the .obj files I had on my computer. For the others .obj files I got the name but not an image Most of the 3D files I have are .obj.

Can't help much here except to note that it takes the program a while to generate the images and if you have a lot of files in a directory the program can take a looong time (a few minutes) to generate all the thumbnails. HTH Ed

OBJ objects can be a pain sometimes when polys used in them have more than 3 sides. Carrara and other apps will choke on such OBJ files and display garbage.

So would 3DS be a better file format to use?
