Ballistic Publishing's Expose 6...Exposed!

If there's one thing that I've learned about Ballistic Publishing, it's their commitment to putting forth the finest quality publications that are a sheer joy to hold in your hands. Flipping through the latest in their Exposé series, it is a wonder to behold. So much brilliant artwork contributed by digital artists from around the globe, neatly contained in one book perfect for anyone's bookshelf, or better yet, coffee table! Daniel Wade and Paul Hellard have once again done an incredible job of putting this all together.

For Exposé 6, there was a record number of over 5200 entries submitted. That's an astounding number to be sure. But more than that, imagine having to go through all those entries to come up with the final number of 334 images that fill this book. That was a job well handled by a panel of experts in their own right. Filling out the advisory board for Exposé 6 were:

• Lorne Lanning (Co-Founder, President, and Creative Director, Oddworld Inhabitants)
• Brom (renowned fantasy artist)
• Christopher Sloan (Art Director, National Geographic Magazine)
• Stephan Martiniere (renowned science fiction and fantasy artist)
• David Wright (Creative Director, NVIDIA)
• Max Dennison (Founder, Matte Painting UK)
• Phil Straub (renowned illustrator)
• Ryan Church (blockbuster concept artist)
• Jeff Mottle (Founder, CGArchitect.com)

Now, let's take a look at the categories (twenty of them!). Most of the categories remained the same as in previous editions, but there were a few alterations, as well as a few additions this time around. The categories in Exposé 6 are:

• Portrait (Painted & Rendered)
• Fantasy
• Fantasy Femmes
• Architecture (Exterior & Interior)
• Concept Art
• Creatures
• Environment
• Futurescapes
• Matte Painting
• Science Fiction
• Abstract & Design
• Product Design & Still Life
• Warriors
• Conflict
• Humorous
• Whimsical
• Storytelling
• Transport

My particular favorite pieces fell into the categories of Architecture, Matte Painting, and Abstract and Design. But, of course, that's merely my taste and there is definitely something for everyone here.

While everyone appearing in this book could truly carry an award, there were two classes of award given for each category: Master and Excellence. While only one Master award was given in each category, there were also 1-3 Excellence awards given. Furthermore, there was one Grand Master award given over all. This went out to Syd Mead, who is appropriately highlighted at the beginning of the book with a look at his work, as well as some great food for thought from the man that worked on movies such as Aliens and Bladerunner.

So, if you haven't gathered by now just how well I think of Exposé 6, then you definitely missed a big something, or perhaps you fell asleep after reading the first line of this review. In any case, I highly recommend this book. Wait...scratch that. I highly recommend this fine collection of outstanding digital artwork in high quality print. Dare I say that you may even look into collecting previous editions if you don't have them already.
