Interview with Freelance Designer/Animator Erica Hu It was over a year ago that I stumbled upon a motion graphics piece that really blew me away. That piece was Seasons, by Erica Hu. Using tools such as Cinema 4D and After Effects, Erica's Seasons is a surrealistic journey through seasonal transformation, going well beyond what you would expect to see, as Erica presents her artistic take on each of the four seasons in stunningly animated detail. Intrigued by a recent product from Wacom, that is not a tablet, but something that can be utilized by the artist-on-the-go, I had to take a closer look. As rotoscoping is a crucial part of any video production today, so is the importance of the job of a roto artist, both in skill and efficiency. There are a number of outstanding tools available today to handle roto work, but the roto artist still needs to refine his or her own skills to use these to the fullest. This is where a book like the wonderful Rotoscoping: Techniques and Tools for the Aspiring Artist, by Benjamin Bratt, comes in very handy. Nick C Sorbin [nickcharles] |
If you work with video, in post-production or visual effects, or have an interest in it, chances are that you have heard of Imagineer Systems and their mocha product line, which provide everything you may need for tracking, rotoscoping, and object insertion or removal in video editing. Recently, I had the opportunity to check out HP's EliteBook 8540w Mobile Workstation that's already received some excellent marks around the web. Idiots and Angels is Mr. Plympton's sixth animated feature film. The entire film was incredibly hand drawn by Bill alone, pencil on paper, and then colored and shaded digitally. He has said it took him about a year to write and storyboard the film, a year to draw it, and almost a year for post production. And that's certainly 3 years well spent on what could be considered his best feature yet. Nick C. Sorbin [nickcharles] |
Have you ever marvelled at the opening title sequence of a film? Perhaps the now classic title sequence to the movie Se7en comes to mind? One of my particular favorites is the title sequence for Quantam of Solace. But, whatever the genre of film, the purpose of the title sequence is, of course, to introduce the audience to what they are about to see, setting the proper tone and mood. And, just what is it that makes a title sequence work as intended? This and so much more is answered in the book, Creative Motion Graphic Titling For Film, Video, & the Web. Nick C. In all honesty, I myself had never really given the Adobe Elements software much thought previously, and I must say that I was quite surprised at what I found. Though originally published in May of 2009, let me introduce a book here that caught my attention while learning Vue. Titled "Vue 7 Beyond The Basics" by Richard Schrand, this book is clearly written with the target for intermediate to advanced users of Vue. In a couple of ways, replacing the standard mouse with a pen tablet is just plain smart. For instance, repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel can be avoided with the ease of using a pen for many tasks. Also, digital artists can gain a great deal of natural artistic freedom and precision with the use of a pen over the mouse. So, with that in mind, let me introduce Adesso and their line of tablets, including the Z12 model this review is based on. Nick C. Sorbin [nickcharles] - 8 opinions posted |

In the reality of these hard economic times we are living in, more than ever there is a need to work more efficiently and be more productive in our work. To learn more in a shorter time to keep ahead in the game is key to the creative professional. However, education need not always come at a price, and it would be ideal to receive such support from the very purveyors of the tools we use in our daily work. Where to begin? Why, at the beginning, of course! Beginning with the birth of Merlin, this novel traces Merlin's youth and his growth into his role as visionary of Britain's destiny, and the complex struggles and events that lead to the conception of King Arthur. Right from the Prologue in this retelling of an ancient legend, you catch a sense of great things to come...a mixture of magic, suspense, and mystery.
