When approached by the good folks at Renderosity to say a few things about our newest figure, “Scarlet”, I will admit, I wasn't quite sure where to begin. As a studio, Sixus1 Media has produced so many figures through the years that I've been incredibly proud of, but none as much as Scarlet. From having worked on numerous human figures in the past (trust me: if you've used Poser at all since version 6, you already have a good pile of our work there, even if you didn't realize it!) and understanding all too well the scrutiny they come under, how fiercely vocal some will be with their opinions of them, as well as how disappointing it can be for users who embrace one to find it abandoned with little to no support after they've invested in it, I realized from the beginning that what I set out to do with Scarlet was a task not to be taken lightly. From the outset, I committed to an idea that I would not release this figure until I was personally satisfied with her on multiple levels and had a catalog of content waiting for her that would make embracing her a worthwhile investment to artists out there interested in something new. Simply put, I was committed to not wasting your time and mine; to creating something I would be willing to support and stand behind for years to come, and which hopefully might attract the  same from other content creators who appreciate the dedication and love that went into her. In the years that Scarlet has been in development, along with her male counterpart who you will all be meeting very soon, a lot has changed inside Poser as both a program and a community. With changes come choices, and so I'd like to talk for a moment  about one in particular I have had to make.

Once upon a time, there was only Poser and a lot of things for a content creator like myself were very simple. Over time, that has obviously changed and with that change comes certain decisions and complexities of both art and business. As Scarlet has matured in her development cycle, so has Poser in some incredible ways. And while it may not be the only platform for this type of content any longer, it became clear to me that as we, vendors, have been pulled in other directions, so, too have many of the artists out there using what we make. Some have went elsewhere, many have stayed with Poser, and many embrace both. As a business person, one tries to think strategically, but as an artist, you are in the business of following your heart. My career was built in Poser, thanks to the support of Poser users. That's not to slight anyone who feels drawn elsewhere, but just to say that Poser and it's dedicated users have been such a blessing to me that when I examined where my heart was pointed, it was directly at these people and this platform. Put another way, it seemed to me that while there may be another lady walking by with some allure, there's something very special to be said for recognizing the beauty of the one you've chosen to be with. Poser and her users are what built my career, and now, with other options available, I made the decision that my human figures would be made specifically to show Poser and her users some much needed love. I hope that comes through in both “Scarlet” and the ongoing stream of content we have lined up for her.

Scarlet has been in development for over six years now, gone through more iterations than I care to recall and received more polish, time, sweat and love than anything I've ever made in my 20 years as a pro 3D artist. Pulling from two decades experience in visual effects, animation and game/media development, combined with all those years of customer feedback and interaction, we developed a feature set built into Scarlet that takes advantages of the latest bells and whistles within Poser, and one which was built squarely with two goals in mind: 1. to provide users with something as smooth, simple, and elegant as possible and 2. to push myself to whole new level in terms of quality, ease of use, and versatility. As an animator and vfx artist/technical director, this is what I have always wanted to see in a figure, something as useful and powerful to the professional as it is easy and inviting to the absolute beginner. More often than not, the balance between those two things is incredibly hard to strike, but I feel that with Scarlet, we really have made something Poser users of every level can appreciate.

Here are a few of the key features we've built that are a little different but I feel bring something very fresh and useful to the idea of a human figure for Poser.

1) Advance Proportion System. Scaling, i.e. the ability to control and have flexibility with the proportions of a figure have long been an issue inside Poser. What we've brought tot he game here is a highly finessed set joint parameters making extensive use of skin weights (something we have years of experience with as character animators using Maya and Max) and scaling functionality in a number of unique and subtle ways, then combined the effects of those into parameters that we then control through the various Proportion dials you'll find on her body. Part of the beauty of this system is that while Poser's Fitting Room is a great tool in general, we realized that we could build Scarlet in such a way as to make a large amount of the proportional features play very well with things created using that "room" of Poser. Most clothing created for/converted to Scarlet and coming out of the Fitting Room will tend to work with most aspects of the Advanced Proportion System in a way far superior to scaling methodology of Poser's past. The degree of character variety and shape this affords is, I believe, very unique. Included as samples of just a small portion of what can be achieved with the APS are the settings “Little Person” and “Bobble Toon”. While these appear as "morphs" on the body of the figure, in actuality, they are proportion settings driving the APS as dependent parameters which have the added benefit that they will translate into most clothing developed for Scarlet with NO NEED to transfer/inject/add anything at all to the clothing. Literally, the proportion dials will drive elements already in the rigging used for her clothing, which then simply interact with rotations normally. This can also be combined with traditional full body morphs for, quite literally, limitless possibilities. The APS is at the core of Scarlet, and brings a very different set of capabilities to both poser users and content creators.

2) Makeup Masking System. Built into Scarlet's default material node network are a system of painted masks that are setup to allow the user to quickly and very easily change eye, lip, and cheek makeup tones by simply selecting a color swatch where designated by the node name. Example: if you go into the material room and from the drop down select EyeMakeupAreaLeft, there you'll see a node labeled EyesAndCheeks. Clicking on the top color swatch of this node will allow you to choose a color to effect the makeup of her left eye. The same setup is in place for EyeMakeupAreaRight, Lips and HeadSkin. The usage for each of these is the same: simply change the top color swatch of the nodes labeled either"EyesAndCheeks" as you'll find ont eye and head skin areas; or "LipsColor" which is found on the lips, and the change will be carried out within a pre-masked area for a soft color shift as opposed to the hard edged changes that come from using strictly material zones by themselves. Users are fully allowed to create their own combinations of makeups just from altering these color nodes, save and redistribute the material collections for them as you like. I also encourage other developers to experiment with creating their own new masks with painted shapes that can be plugged in to the image nodes that drive this system for masking you'll find in the various material zones (EyeShadowMask, CheeksMask, and LipsMask are the labels on the nodes, respectively....) . Immediately, this is a fast, creative, method of building a robust collection of makeup looks for Scarlet.

3) Built In Dial Driven Utility Poses. Certain poses or parts of them are traditionally either tedious or problematic in Poser, so we've designed into Scarlet some key dials that provide an immediate solution. Some of these types of controls have been standards in our figures for 10 years or more including Side-Side, Up-Down and Dilate controls for the eyes located on the head, and controls for all finger joints found which are located on the hands alongside Grasp. Spread and now Fist presets. New additions are the ArmRaised dials found on shoulders which effects an extremely smooth movement of the arm raising above the head (an effective, smooth solution to this type of pose has been one of the things we most often have heard from users through the years... ). Then, on the feet, you'll find the HighHeelsPose dials which, as the name would suggest, immediately position the feet for use in a basic high heel shoe, such as the ones included in the base Scarlet kit.

4) Sculpted Strands Hair Solution. One feature with Scarlet that I'd like to mention is actually in the form of the hair prop included in her base kit, labeled "Sculpted Strands". "Sculpted Strands" introduces a new approach to Poser hair that simultaneously takes advantage of Poser's own strand hair rendering capability and marries that to the robust toolset of Zbrush's Fiber Mesh system in a very unique way. Unlike the more common polygon based hairs, Sculpted Strands renders with Posers strands system in a way that introduced the potential for amazing realism inside Firefly, while at the same time, containing a set of morphs which cover a wide variety of very different hair styles, something incredibly difficult to achieve with either polygons or Poser's native strand based hair tools. Unlike traditional strand hairs in Poser, however, which may require the labor and time hit of running a long simulation or the tedium of the “styling” tools, Sculpted Strands has style and movement shapes already pre-baked in, visible and usable just as with any normal "morph". Also, by being strand based, the hair itself is not bound the restrictions of image map based hair, and just a few moments of examining the included material collections for Sculpted Strands should reveal the immediate color flexibility of the piece. Also, the strands are parented to a simple skull cap which can be scaled or morphed to follow your changes to Scarlet, or quite possibly be adapted to any other figure as well. Sculpted Strands includes a large number of empty INJ channels as well, ready and waiting for content from creators. (Note: creating new strand shapes does require Zbrush and the ztl file included in the Sculpted Strands Developer Resource we will have available very soon.)

So, that is a quick introduction to Scarlet and her feature set. Scarlet is not an attempt to replace any of the existing figure solutions folks have come to know and love, but rather my personal way of providing something new, different and hopefully exciting specifically for Poser users. I hope that everyone will keep the spirit of fun and creativity in mind with which she was built. In the end, it's all about you, the Poser users, the art form and ultimately, your art.

Thanks to all the friends we've made in Poser down through the years. Your support is what has made this possible. And thanks in advance to all the new folks we hope to get to know through Scarlet. I look forward to seeing what kinds of awesome art you will make!

- Les Garner aka Sixus 1
