Interview with Exclusive Vendor of the Year - Rhiannon

Do you primarily work with Poser or Daz? Or both?

Rhiannon: For the last several years I’ve been working primarily in Daz Studio and with the Genesis figures. It took some time for me to be comfortable with the program, but once I dug in, I realized that the capabilities of the Daz Studio program and the Genesis figures are truly outstanding. Daz Studio in particular is very “content development friendly.”

Can you give us an idea of the typical workflow on a project?

Rhiannon: For clothing packs, the first step is to visualize the end result … the theme, the whole energy and feel of it. I look at trends in the movies and video games, other fantasy art, etc. I also look around the marketplace to see if there any similar products. Of course, it always helps to look at past successes, in order to gauge what is likely to sell well. Lately I’ve taken a break from making large, fantasy themed packs … I have to mix it up from time-to-time in order to break the monotony and reboot my inspiration.

When working on new characters, I usually begin by choosing the skin I want for the textures, and then gather the resources I need, i.e. photos, resource packs, etc. I don’t usually begin working on a morph until the skin textures are done. Then it’s just a matter of getting that perfect face and body done and moving on to the extras she might inspire.

Rowan by Rhiannon

You have so much great work in your gallery and in your store that it's hard to choose one, but I was taken by Rowan in particular. How did you achieve such an amazing skin render on this figure? Can you tell us a bit about this project came to be and what kind of work you did on it?

Rhiannon: I wanted to do a pale redhead for Genesis 3 … pale, rosy skin with just the perfect freckled face. It is sometimes difficult to work with pale skin because sometimes the details get washed out, but the Iray shader system is so fantastic. I’ve spent many hours experimenting with it. And this community has so many smart and talented people to learn from and pick up different tips and techniques for working with shaders. With Rowan I used a completely different shader from the ones in my previous character packs, and I think it turned out beautifully with her particular skin tone.

Who are some of the influences on you as an artist?

Rhiannon: Wow, there are so, so many fantastic artists out there. Of course, I always love all things Brom, Lockewood, Parkinson, Frazetta, and Vallejo. Lately I have discovered some artists that I really admire … the work of Elena Dudina and Jennifer Healy, they’re fantastic. Also Aly Fell’s pinup/fantasy styles. Oh, and I really love the quirky and unusual style of Serge Berault’s pinups, they’re so interesting and cool.

For the last several years, I’ve had much less time to do renders and create artwork than I would like … one of my resolutions for this year is to make more time for that, fingers crossed.
